Hi all.
I started the car (MY 2000 E320 with 130K on it) yesterday afternoon at work and smoke started to come out of the went above the headlight switch accompanied with strong burnt plastic smell.
I shot it off, start again, same thing. I move forward to be able to open the doors completely. shut off the engine and remove the key.
Only thing is, the engine kept running!
WTF?
I insert the key again but it doesn't turn. I remove it, engine still running, steering wheel lock is off and I can move the shift lever, meanwhile smoke is still coming. I quickly removed all the fuses from the headlight switch, there are about 10 of them under the side panel, smoke stopped, engine kept running.
Next I took out the back seat and disconnected the battery. Engine died.
I reconnect the battery, all lights on the dashboard come on, I tried to start it, wouldn't.
So now what?!
I proceeded to remove the switch completely, it took me about 30 min, however two of the four connector going into the switch were badly burnt and it was very difficult to pry them out of the switch.
Anyway, after removing the switch the car started and ran normally except no lights however the blinkers worked.
I drove home, replaced the switch and connected the cables. The burnt connectors went on with great difficulty but I didn't have a choice, I had to force them on as I have no idea how to replace the plugs.
Everything was working except, of course, the pre-existing issues with the lights, like no reverse light, and no high beam. I had those problems prior to the headlight switch issue.
But after putting everything together the ABS and BAS lights came on and no brake lights.
I connected DAS and it indicated brake lamp switch. It worked 5 minutes before when I tried after plugging everything together. Crazy.
So, today I will get a brake lamp switch from the dealer and see what happens.
My question is why didn't any of the fuses blow instead of the whole bloody switch burning up?
The same problem may arise again in the future and I don't have another headlight switch laying around.
Honestly this car is the biggest piece of shite I ever head, and I had me a lot of cars.
So many problems in the last 5 years, it beats any Fiat, Yugo or Lada any day.
