Has anyone used this unit? (plugs into obd port and live 12volt) available on amazon for under $10 dollars. supposed to save all settings when changing battery. Comments appreciated from actual users Regards, Abe G
Frankly - as long as you have your radio code - it's best to followup MB reset procedure for steering angle sensor + accessory systems (sunroof, each window) etc.
And then take 3 minutes and do a ECU/tranny reset - to reset system back to aggressive factory defaults.
If you don't have your Owner's Manual - you can download a copy up thru 2002 W210 in the Owner's Section mbusa.com
I just bought one of the more expensive Schumacher units.
[later edit: the mess below is what the forum software decides to substitute for what I actually type. G'damn marketing. I paid the fees, why this?!]

I bought it just to look at it, got it yesterday, and I think I'm going to return it. It has nice diagnostic LEDs to warn you if you have the connections wrong or your power source isn't up to snuff, but I think I'd only use this thing every couple of years and I can't see storing it and remembering that I own it for that infrequent use pattern.
Since you don't want to run one of these things from a battery charger, and few people have a spare regulated 12v supply around, and the cords for these memory savers are so short as to be impossible to connect to another vehicle's cigar lighter, they appear to be designed to work with a jump box. Portable jump boxes are notorious for not being useful when you actually need them.
I'm going to stick with using jumper cables on the positive underhood lug etc.

I bought one of those portable battery powered boosters on sale for 25 bucks which came with a cable to charge the battery from the cig. lighter connection. Also the booster has a cig. lighter socket outlet to supply 12V . I adapted the cable and put two insulated alligator clips and a fuse and a diode. This is what I will use, and connect the clips to the underhood posts when changing the battery.
Well . . . for example, I have a new aftermarket radio. It has dozens (literally) of custom settings. It's a PITA to go through them all -- I've done it twice now.
(before I bought this head unit, I actually tried to find a modern radio with an EEPROM. It's hard to believe that in 2016 we are still using NVRAM for things like radio configurations.)
Just to avoid that ONE annoyance, I'll use the jumper cables.
Hey . . . I've wondered: does the HomeLink garage opener transmitter lose its programming at power loss?
Again re ob2 and replacing battery! To anyone that has used this. Does the ob2 port stay alive if the key is not turned? If using must the key be turned on to activate port? This would defeat the importance of not leaving key in ignition when changing battery? Simply put you cant use the port unless key is in ignition! So i t would appear that our 210s can not benefit from this gimmick? Just covering all bases,Comments appreciated. regards, Abe G
I've been told to NEVER, EVER leave rolling codes key in the ignition while playing with battery or other electric components.
Dropping the car voltage while the contact is initiating will make the key useless.
Check the prices for new key to see what small error can cost you.
Coming to saving the memory, I would rather use the $10 toward purchase of good jumping cables.
Having 2 cars in the garage side by side cost me about 20 seconds to run jump cables between them and replace battery without loosing memory.
Yeah, the question was, can one use this gizmo to save memory with key off the ignition? the answer is Yes. Would I use it ? the answer is No. I would use the charge posts under the hood with my portable booster battery.
You are correct about the ignition key issue when you play with battery power.
