1>Would it make sense to purchase used accumulators?
2>Are they all the same? 4matic/rwd?

Frankly - new accumulators - from Febi or Crteco/Freudenberg are about $105 each - new.

The chambers has "membranes" inside which are part of the correct function - and with used accumulators you can't see inside those used chambers to see what condition those used parts are in.

Hope this helps - keep the beat !

What was the problem you were trying to correct ? Ordered a set myself to hopefully correct some float issues, but I haven't officially checked the fluid to see if it is needed at 61,000 miles/2003.

I took my car to have the accumulators replaced today. I requested that they drive it first. The owner of the German specialist shop drove it and said that he didn't notice anything. He said that if the accumulators were bad, it would be obvious and that my head would just about hit the roof on bumps. He didn't want to replace them and said this car was nearly perfect. He said he wished it was his car, and he sees a lot of German cars.

Do you all agree with this assessment? I am a little frustrated as I truly feel has too much float at times. Do accumulators have subtle issues when bad that gradually get worse or is it normally "all or none?"

It's usually all or none. There is no gradual decline like a regular shock.

Perhaps if you explained the "floating" feel you have....? I read through your previous explanation and still don't get it. Floating sensation as in what? At what speed?

Mostly at highway speeds. The sensation is and up and down feeling, possibly from the rear. Sometimes it feels as if the left lifts higher than the right on bumps and then settles down. Wife says it doesn't feel like she is fully engaged with the ground. I agree. It's just a constant sensation of not feeling planted when road isn't perfectly smooth or hitting a dip. It feels like it has too much upward travel but not a huge drop where your head hits the roof.

The local German indy shop supposedly test drove it and noticed nothing. It just doesn't feel settled compared to any other car I have owned, and this has the best suspension of any of them.

The only suggestion the shop had was that my tires could be causing it. They are pretty new Firestones that came on the car. Not my first choice, but too much life left to junk. I can't imagine they would cause the car to have upward motion.

I realize these likely have a bit more airy feel vs. my Acura TL with stiffer suspension, but it just doesn't seem right for a car that was pretty advanced for it's day and seemingly still up to date suspension wise with more modern vehicles.
