Can anyone explain this?
I just drove my 02 wagon 35 miles (almost all highway) from DE to PA. I would say at about the 30 mile mark I started to hear a tiny whine and the car literally would no longer move when I got it to my driveway. It will move if I increase the RMPs. So - I will be able to pull it into the driveway.
Back story: The car died while my sister had it over the Christmas holiday. I have been traveling constantly since the new year and could not pick it up. The shop where it was towed (she forgot to turn off the lights -- battery died) checked it out and said it could be the connector plate but they recommended a full rebuild at 4.5-5k. They are an independent BMW and MB shop .. they don't do the trans in-house. Without an understanding of the issue I was not about to drop 5k.
Went down to DE thinking I would call a tow truck. Car started right up and it drove normally around the block ... I thought maybe easy and steady on the gas.. see how far I get. So, I'm trying to understand what fault would cause the car to operate normally for 30 miles ..and how best to proceed with a fix.
Strange occurrence. The morning the car's transmission failed my sister had someone back into the front of the car -- enough that it cracked the front cover in more than one place .. she then drove about 80 miles until the trans started to malfunction. I was wondering if the radiator had been compromised .. allowing coolant/ trans fluid mixing. The shop in DE said they did not think so and the failure was not indicative of that happening .. it is strange.
Anyway -- it's a great car in fantastic shape .. all of maintenance items looked after .. lots of stuff done to it. 140k. It's not worth much more then 5-6k .. at best.
Update: Car cooled down and now shifts correctly -- -- I don't have any CEL or other lights.
