Yesterday I got hit by a double whammy -- the power steering pump started to leak (behind that pulley thingy -- I believe it's in the stickies) and the hose that goes into it is also leaking.
My question is, can I source the shaft seals from nearby stores? Or do I need to order it online?
last I checked, the kit was not available from the dealership anymore. I sourced it from WorldPac in the East Bay. Even then, the kit was incorrect and I had to find a bearing from a local parts store. Im sure you can find one online if you look hard enough. Mine hasn't leaked a drop since I rebuilt it 2 years ago! Good Luck. BTW kit cost me like $14.99
If you have some one handy - it might be the front seal which is like a OE/MB dealer $10 part + labor. Good to replace the reservoir o-ring at the same time.
The "kits" when you find the right one are all Chinese made (or worse).
That said - if correct cross reference - $120 gets you the whole dang thing:
Thanks guys, as it turns out, it was a very focused leak that was spraying hydraulic oil onto the pulley, making me think that I had the shaft seal leak... once I replaced the power steering hose and cleaned the area with degreaser, I had absolutely PS leak, ever.
I've actually measured it over the past two days, zero leaks.
Guess I'm going to keep the rebuild kit for the day it starts to leak...thanks anyway.
For what it's worth, going to pick n pull junkyards isn't worth it if you're looking for PS pump or the hose....people are assholes and they cut everything out while removing parts, and that includes the PS hose.
I may have to replace my power steering hose. Where did you get yours? I'm not seeing it at my preferred aftermarket source and MSRP from the dealer is about $140. I think I'm after part #210 466 04 81.
If that's the return hose, just about any decent junkyard will have it. There is a JY near me that specializes in 90-05 German cars only. It was one of the nicer ones -- I wasn't allowed to touch the car. I only had to point out what I wanted and the attendant removed it for me without damaging it.
I paid $40 for it....It's worth checking out your local JY.
The MB OEM part is available from relaible internet guys (like pelican, etc) for $110-$140 - frankly the China-made knockoff's should be about $30 (that's not great quality all all on this part) but internet guys charge $50-$75
