Why would you spend $30 for something that will take space in your garage unused for the years to come?
The steel cable I already had worked perfectly for me. A bit harder to read, but than it coils conveniently when I don't use it.
There is the question if the factory dipstick stop 5 mm from the bottom of the pan, so you might want to adjust the scale, but 5 mm is well withing tolerance of fluid level and I did not have a problem with it.
Actually if one of the MB dipstick owners could measure the length that goes in before stop, that would be very helpful

I agree that all we need is a "springy" wire with a couple of notches at the end. The Ebay part is advertized as :
Length from tip to handle 45 1/2"
However, I suspect that there is a handle included in that measurement, so the stick should be smaller than this ?

The stick is much longer than needed, so the tool length is not helping.
I did measure how much my steel cable goes in as the last bend in the tube require strong push and is easy confusing the measurements.
The issue is that the factory tool has a bigger square on the end of plastic scale, that supposed stops the dipstick few mm above the bottom of the pan, where the cable goes. Figuring out that distance would be helpful even the 5 or so mm is not crucial.

Some of the pros and cons of a home made versus a manufactured transmission dipstick are in this thread.
IMHO - home made dipsticks carry too much risk compared to buying a $30 tool. This thread shows one member who made a dipstick, and then compared it to a MB dipstick, noting that the ATF was too low with the home made by 10-15mm.

Debate of home-made versus $30 for correct dipstick bring to mind the saying 'Penny wise, pound foolish'.
