Replacement Smart Key - E320

As I'm a relative newbie to MB ownership, appears that I lost one of the 2 smart keys for my 1999 E320. I've read through the forums but want to make sure that I understand that I should order an ADDITIONAL key, not a replacement which would render my existing key useless, correct?

Also, I can only purchase the additional key via my local MB dealership, correct?

Thanks for the help!

Andy,

It's true that the only way to get an additional smart key with blade is through an MB dealer. They don't care too much whether it's a replacement or additional key, either way you get the same thing.

You'll receive a key/blade designed for the W211, but will work with a W210, since it'll be programed specifically to your car. The blade key which will be of a shorter length from the original will also work with all the corresponding locks.

You can order new key fully programed to your car via dealers with proof of ownership.
Suppose dealer can delete lost keys from car memory but they don't advertise this service and never have heard about anybody doing that. Would cost probably close to $100 to check the car memory and probably that is why new owners don't worry about a friend of auction guy to show up at your garage at night.

The dealer can invalidate a key, but that requires them to read your existing key and order the proper one. I know I had a defective key they read the other one and ordered the wrong one which deleted my good one with the replacement, just order an additional key, if you find the first it will still work.

Yes, you want to order an additional key, NOT a replacement. Dealers are the only source.

Thanks all. Just placed my order at a local MB dealership this AM. Should receive the key by Tuesday. All I needed was current registration and my DL (and credit card...)

How much? Those keys are not cheap, but from dealer to dealer members reported $100 difference.

Went to MB in San Francisco. With tax it was $240. Convenient for me, since I work in SF and was able to swing by the dealership on my way into the office.

Can the key be shipped to your home or do you have to actually bring the car in??
