97 E420 Whining transmission and limp mode

HEre we be again. So I got a few thousand miles on this car since my last issue. Not enough....
So Im driving around and all is well. Then I had a guy pull up next to me and we pushed it a pinch hard to the next light. Directly afterward, we were sitting and taking some pictures..... I hear a whining noise starting. When we went to pull out of the area, the whining got worse and then the car started shifting erratically. Then it went to limp mode. I was able to driver it home as we were not far. However the transmission, after it got going a mile or so, began to slip. Then it would slip to the point of not pushing us at all. We stopped and let it cool down and it would go again for a few miles. Luckily we were not far from home. This morning I got in it and it started whining immediately, then i drove it. Its in limp mode and wont come out of first.... or is it just unable to shift? Whiniung gets louder as I drive. Parked it til i get some insight and time to mess with it.

Have you checked the fluid level? Looked under for leaks?

I'd probably start by checking the fluid level and removing the TCM to check for fluid incursion. The whining is not good, though.

Good luck.

Check your oil, check to see if your filter has not collapsed. The oil is not circulating, but you might have had a solenoid quit on you too, but also do an inspection of the connector to the conductor plate.

I'd even disconnect the top transmission cooler line, and watch several quarts of fluid flow onto new one-gallon graduated painters pail. Use 1/2" ID clear tubing to attach to the cooler line. Two to three quarts will take about thirty-seconds if you see no flow your main oil pump may be damaged.

Best of luck,

Martin

So the bets are in.....

I have someone else tell me that the filter may have come loose or collapsed. IM hoping that its something simple. The TCM was not contaminated. While Im under there I will pull the plug and check that side of the wires. THis car had the oil in the TCM before....

TIIME TO WORK ON THIS AGAIN!!!

So ive got a minute.... I have a new filter, gasket, and some fluid. Lets change the filter, top it back off and see what happens. THis was suggested by a friend of a friend... who owns a local trans shop.

Inspect your pan for particles very carefully. Look for very flat jagged particles-indicating the clutches are wearing-out, and your transmission is wearing out quicker.

Dissect your filter membrane for particles look at theses 722.6 videos.

Also.....

In addition, Im disconnecting the battery and connecting the ends together for one hour to ground out the system and clear codes. As suggested by the trans shop owner...

The previous trans filter was quite clogged....

Exactly the same sympthoms were happened on my trans last year. It ended with a costly partial rebuilt (changement of front pump bushings, replacement of K2 drum bushing with bearing as in the post facelift transmissions. Additionally; conductor plate, friction disks on K2 clutch and some seals/o-rings were replaced as a preventive measure too)

Here is the link of my thread about the issue: http://www.benzworld.org/forums/w210...6-failure.html

I hope you can solve it with minimal expense.

Do you get any check engine codes? If I'm not mistaken, this is the same kind of symptom as the conductor plate with speed sensors on it. The speed sensors can't detect how fast the discs are spinning inside so it can't function and goes into limp mode. The whining could be the transmission parts spinning without regulation due to not having a reading on the speed. And if I recall correctly, limp mode also makes some whining noise when it is operating but that is normal when you are in limp mode. The good news is that the conductor plate is a relatively cheap and easy fix. It is a very common problem and maybe 80% of the transmission problems people post about here go back to that.
