98 E320 HD Radio Antenna Question

Hey folks-

I am looking to switch to HD Radio. When I bought the wagon it came with an Alpine CDA-9856 head unit with XM Radio. The regular analog Radio is spotty at best and I am assuming it is because of the tint in the back.

My question for the forum is, does anyone know of an HD Radio Antenna that can be installed like the XM Antenna? The wife's new KIA Soul gets terrific radio reception and my E320 gets none. I don't see the use in going to HD if I cannot somehow come up with a solution for the reception issue.

Suggestions?

wagon antenna is in the side drivers

side rear glass. It is not the antenna that gives the reception issue it is the am/fm diversity amp.
HD requires hardly any antenna to lock on a digital signal so plug it into the regular cable or bypass the diversity amp. You should have no problems.
I did an install on one of the 300's and it got HD reception on several channels even with the antenna not plugged in.
The HD signal is on a sideband of the regular signal or layered on top of so the same antenna wavelength is going to work.
An XM antenna is made to amplify satellite reception
HD is broadcast from your local radio station mast transmitter antenna.
Now if the antenna is broken that is another issue and it could easily be resolved by installing an electric motor operated antenna that goes up and down when the radio is turned on or off. Wagon rear wheel well with angled mount similar to what you see on W124 wagons.
Like
the one below or where the hole is located in my latest addition to the collection and where the new motorized antenna for the hd radio will reside shortly. That option will require routing the antenna cable and wiring to the antenna power wire on the HU.
