1999 E300TD won't start after changing fuel filter.

Hi everyone,

So I'm new to DIY on my Benz and the first thing I've attempted to do is replace the fuel filter. I took out the old one, filled the new one with fresh diesel and installed it. The car started for about 5 seconds and then cut out. I tried starting it for another 5 minutes, each time it cranked for progressively less time until not at all. I thought the battery might me drained so I let it sit and then got a boost from a friends car. Still nothing. I tried again 2 hours later and the car made strange machine gun type noises while attempting to crank. Now no sound at all and no reaction when trying to start. I did nothing with the pre filter, just the main filter. Please help!!

You mean you filled up new filter with contaminated fuel and let the contamination go to the injectors? I hope this is not the reason for your trouble.
Those engines take lot of cranking to bleed the air and the only way to do it is keep on cranking. Sounds like your battery needs recharging.
Also topping off the tank and parking the car nose down helps in putting some fuel pressure to the injection pump.

Yeah it took me awhile to crank mine after changing the filter. I just kept at it. Once it turned over it was fine.

Oh, well no, I put fresh diesel in that I filled in a portable tank from the station (thankfully a 10 min walk away!) I think the battery is zapped so I went and got a charger so I'll have to let it charge first before I try it again. I'm just worried about the noise, sounds like a rapid tapping when I tried to crank it before.. hope this works :/

The sounds are the hardest to describe and understand over the net, but do the obvious things first and than worry when something else comes. Charge the battery and keep the key on the starter for no longer than 10 seconds at the time, giving it at least 30 seconds between for the starter to cool off. After few attempts you might want to let it cool off for several minutes.

Thanks a lot for the help! I got it started! Going great now... I charged it over night and starts fine now, a lot smoother with the new filter. I'll have to get a new battery and make sure I do it right next time I change the filter!

Diesel cars are slow. When I changed fuel filter on mine, it started right away.
