Question Driver seat will not tilt - control panel or motor?

Hi everyone,

I'm picking up a 1997 e420 this Saturday and while test driving it I noticed I could not tilt the driver's seat up or down. I can adjust the bottom part and the head rest but not the back of the seat. Would you think it would be the button controller on the door? Or the motor? Any easy way of determining this? Will the passenger controls plug in to the driver side for testing?

Had the same problem a while back. Fixed itself when I replaced the battery. The switches also go bad from time to time.

I would suspect the switch too. Try taking it apart and spray it off well with some good electrical contact cleaner. CRC MAF cleaner (non residue) has been recommended also.

Thanks for the replies. I'll take a look at it Saturday. How can the battery be the cause if the other switches work? Also, do you know if the passenger controls will plug in the driver's side? I can always look and try. I've seen these controls on ebay for around $40 - $60 so that's not bad if I have to replace it.

Sorry I missed that question earlier. As far as I know the passenger side seat control switch should be electrically identical to the driver side switch. Physically it might be a mirror image.

yes, they are mirror imaged parts, not swappable. if you need, I may have
spare for $20, plus shipping. pretty sure they're still in my w210 box. so
try to isolate the problem first. verify continuity in seat junction blocks and
work backwards towards power source.

I think the OP just wants to test the passenger side switch on drivers side to rule out bad motor, not to install permanently.

oh....mmm. too much meds. yes, i guess it is possible that the pinouts are
the same on driver vs pax side control modules. so be very sure to take
static readings before energizing.
