Stuck gas cap

E320, 2000 wagon, 4matic. I have replaced the gas cap with a new on but that did not fix the problem. The cap turns but will not come off. The normal clicking does not occurr. I check the top of the tube leading to the tank and I did not find any bending. It seems smooth enough. After looking at this cap I can imagin what the problem is.

I know how you feel my friend...

It most likely is your cap as I have the exact same problem right now. A 10 minute trip to the gas station turned into 45 for me.

On the left is my "new cap". On the right is my old one, which was causing code problems.

If you look at the arrows, my "new cap" got stuck because that plastic catch got unseated. It is supposed to turn against the two metal catches and turn the whole cap off. Instead, it's just turning the plastic only, leaving the metal catches locked.

As you can see, I pried mine off because it got stuck as well. I just got this cap not too long ago and I'm returning it to autohausaz for a warranty replacement.

Simple solution

This is a relatively common problem that has been discussed earlier. There is an issue with the filler neck where a tab bends and impedes the cap to be unscrewed.

The most cost effective solution, other than replacing the fuel tank, is to get a different type of cap, which is simpler but works fine. It's made by Blau (Germany) and available at autohausAZ.

I went through three new caps before getting this one that has worked great for a few years now. Hope that helps.

Cheers

gas cap

Do you have a part number? autohause only list the mercedes one. When I bought the new mercedes cap it seemed to work once or twice and then failed again. So I think it must be the tube tabs even though I can't feel any bends.

Thanks. I'll go over to the closest car quest and get one order.

I ordered the cap from NAPA. But I believe I've got a cheaper fix. I broke the plastic ring thing out on the old cap. Put it on the tank and so far, no ce light. Been that way since 5/14. Hope this helps.

Gurban - Seems like a great idea on breaking the white ring off. This is the second e320 I have had this problem with.

Frustrated today - I broke the white ring off as you suggested - and it works perfectly - seems to seal nice and tight. I will report back if I get the light for bad gas cap.

Cheers
