97 e320 tranny not shifting into 5th

Hi guys

My tranny is acting wierd. sometimes it goes into 5th gear and sometimes it just doesnt shift into 5th. I would shift it manually into 4th and then to the right again to see if it would catch while driving on the highway. NOTHING. stays in 4th gear. (70mph at 3krpm...should be just above 2.5k) maybe a couple days pass while still driving, the car would shift into 5th without a problem, then the next time i turn the car on....only 4th gear would go not 5th.

Has anyone ran into this problem? does anyone know of a fix?

There is no codes or lights coming up, also changed the tranny oil 30k highway miles ago (all 8 quarts)

thanks guys for any info

To QUICKLY identify and to understand the why, you need to have the transmission module scanned by MB diagnostic software via the 38 pin connector(or knock off).

I and others could speculate and suggest a faulty solenoid or range selection switch. But what do you do with the information----yea I can just see the car on crates and you underneath trying to locate the conductor plate or ripping the center console apart trying to locate the switch. Save yourself loads of time and money----get the car properly scanned

Car was scanned by MB dealer and came out with no codes. they were also assuming the range selection switch you are referring to but the master tech was staying away from it as it does switch at random.

any one run into this?

I had a similar problem on mine and I checked the transmission oil level which was low, I added a quart and the issue resolved immediately.

I am experiencing the exact problem. Also no codes with MB STAR equivalent. Did you ever resolve?

As always with these problems, is the fluid, filter recent(less than two years)? It the fluid up to the proper level(The testing dip stick is being used?)? No fluid up in the TCM in computer. Can you feel the first to second gear shift? Battery okay too...It should drop below 12v after driving the car the day before?

My three guesses:

1) 5th gear switch on shifter not making contact

2) 5th lock-up solenoid just worn or seal is bad

3) torque converter 5th gear clutch pack worn or damaged.

4) locked luck-up shift piston in valve body or broken spring?

Personally none of these will generate any kind of codes, except for electrically open solenoid. The way transmission technicians troubleshoot the 722.6 is reading the adaptation values.

What would I do?

I would go to the junk yard, and get some solenoids-shift ones are different from the pressure regulation

I would drop the pan(save the fluid) open each valve body spring plate, and inspect each valve/spring

Drop the valve body, swap the 1-2 solenoid with a 3-4 solenoid-Remember solenoid 1-2 has a dual roll, it shifts from 4-5 too, and the torque converter lock-up is active full-on when in 5 gear.

You could take the shifter apart, but it depends how patient you are, yet I would!! Clean the contacts with contact cleaner and swabs. Then wipe the contacts with 800 to 1000 grit sand paper-where there is a way there is a will!! I repaired my turn signal this way and saved my self 500 bucks or so... Their is a YouTube on how to do this-just use 722.6 on you tube...

Lastly, the torque converter clutches are more fragile than others, so city driving in overdrive should be avoided, only in constant highway speeds. Sometimes the large clutch parts will make it to the pan, and the filter. I hope you have the old filter, so you can diagnose it?

Let us know what you find.

Maybe I am not experiencing that problem...
I should have indicated that I had recently purchased the car, already dealt with limp mode/conductor plate replacement and might be a bit paranoid about the condition of my 722.6

The car is a 1999 e300 and it just didn't seem normal to me that a diesel would be revving at 3000rpm at 80mph but after doing the math, I suppose it could be within spec. Does that sound right?

About revving 3k at 80mph, You should be slightly under that, but I never go to 80mph-I just drive like and old lady, but I drive long and slow-meaning 80% hwy 20% city, so for me it is important to get that 5th gear.

The conductor plate is a fact of life with a 722.6. I would not read into it. Just change your fluid every handful of years, and check it throughout the year with a testing dip stick.

Enjoy your car. The killer is the gear sound, but it can be masked by bad engine mounts. The symptoms are the same for your 96 S600 as it has the 722.6. The gear sound is the K2 bearing in most cases failing...
