MAF replacement - can't remove it...

Does anybody know how to remove the MAF unit on a 97 E420? I tried today but couldn't get it out. Removed the plastic cover and had the MAF in front of me. Could unplug the sensor, the other connector adjacent to it and I could twist it a bit but I could not remove it. Anybody know how to get it out?

thank you very much for the help.

Try this, three clips on the other end from the clamp/ring:

thanks for the reply. I did a search but must have missed the one you linked to. I found the DIY for the 94 model but that one is different. Will give it another try tomorrow.

That model is a known nightmare for pulling the MAF assembly. A flex-shaft screwdriver is helpful to get to the clamp; alternatively a 1/4" ratchet may assist.

You could also look in the W140 and W124 forums as well as the R129, all of them had your M119 engine, same MAF configuration.

Good luck, you have my sympathy.

ok, good to know it's not just me. I'm by no means a mechanic but I enjoy learning and doing things myself. So far I've exchanged the A/C control CPU, the rear window regulator and the radiator. I would like to learn more and be able to do more repairs and replacements myself.

Now I want to get the MAF done and as simple as it should be I just struggled with it. I would also like to replace the spark plugs but would feel more comfortable if I could see pics of a DIY job. I took a closer look at it yesterday removed some of those metal clamps. Wow, one of those metal clamps was nearly impossible to put back on. I either put it on first and then I couldn't "squeeze" the clamp enough so it would snap on, or I'd end up putting it on only to not being able to secure it with the clamp afterwards. No room for my fingers...I ended up using a tiny cable tie. This way I could have the clamps squeezed together "permanently" as the cable tie "squeezed" that metal clamp. With that help I could easily put the metal clamp back on and I then used a knife to cut the cable tie and the clamp snapped right back to secure the piece in place.

I see now...a flex screw driver is what I need...thanks...wish this MAF was horizontally placed in the open like I saw in some pictures of V6 320s...that would make it so much easier to work on.

Without the right tool, the MF in MAF mean something else to a mechanic.

You lost me there.

I was looking at replacing this

but can't remove it. I can see the screw but it's situated horizontally without much room to work on so I i can't get to it. I'll buy a flex shaft screwdriver later today and give that a try.

Could you please elaborate in what you meant with "the MF in MAF mean something else to a mechanic." Thank you.

"MF" is shorthand for a common curse-phrase, one that appeared in all versions of Carlin's "Seven Words You Can't Say on Television".

It might, perhaps, be uttered or shouted by someone trying to remove the screw on that clamp.

Hopefully the head of the clamp is a hex (they often are, around 7-8mm or 5/16"), so you can actually use a flex-shaft 1/4" drive socket on it. Trying to keep a flat-blade screwdriver tip aligned while using a flex-shaft driver will typically cause the utterance of many curse words.

I recently had trouble removing my MAF on the M119 of the W140...

Out of all the "toys" at my disposal, the ONLY thing which worked was the 12 point 7mm Deep Offset Spanner.

Looking at the picture -that looks like a job for my 1/4" nut driver with 10" extension and U-joint right at the socket.
