automatic transmission trouble w210

Hi All

I have a problem with my e300 1997 its got 230k miles up,I have lost all forward drive but still have reverse no noise or problems before power was there one moment and gone the next I actually thought it had slipped into neutral there is oil level on the dipstick any help would be much appreciated.

I think you got your money's worth out of that Tranny.... mine (1999 E320 Wagon) failed at 105,000 miles due to the Spindle Bush Bearing problem.... Cost $5,000 for a re-manufactured Tranny because we were in a hurry to get the car back on the road.

It'll be cheaper if you have time to shop around...

How many times was the Tranny service done during the 230,000 miles?: rolleyes:

Drop the pan and if you see lots of metal bits and parts swimming around... if so, then don't bother to repair it, get a re-manufactured tranny from a good reliable shop.

I would start with confirming the fluid is at correct level.
Our transmission at almost the same mileage is flawless.

Tranny service not done in the last 100k thats how long I have it and there appears to be to much oil in there also its a clear oil ?? thought it was supposed to be red ?

Are you sure you check the transmission fluid? Even new one comes with red tone -the clutches dust makes is dark or brown very fast. We have several topics how to check the fluid level. Hot, engine running and after running via all gears. With car not drivable you can take estimate at cold level marks.

put 1 litrer of atf fluid into auto pipe now have slight very slight forward movement at high revs ???

Don't rev the engine up in gear if the transmission isn't working properly!

This seems to be a common mistake people make - the car isn't moving so they press the pedal harder and burn up the transmission.

If the transmission is slipping or not engaging fully due to low fluid level, revving the engine up can wear away the remaining clutch material very quickly.

A friend of mine did this when a transmission cooler line ruptured while driving. He pushed down harder on the pedal to keep the car going instead of pulling over. He got about another 1/4 mile before the car stopped completely - it had pumped all of the transmission fluid onto the road. We were able to get it going again by replacing the cooler line and refilling the fluid, but it never shifted properly again. The lesson to take away from this is that if your transmission starts to slip or disengages, take your foot off of the accelerator pedal.

Check the fluid level with the proper dipstick tool.
