97 E420 Shutting off

Hi. My 97 E420 just started shutting off when at a stop. I actually had check engine codes, and replaced 2 ignition coils, but as soon as I did, it started stopping and the battery charge and asr lights came on. I took the battery to Autozone to test, and they said it was bad, and I replaced it. I didn't think it was the battery anyway. I opened the hood and I see I need to replace the serpentine belt, but I think it's the alternator. Just trying to see if that's what you all think. It seems like it only shuts off when the temp get around 100, so maybe it's a pump or something? I don't know. Thanks in advance for your help.

I fail to see the cause and effect relationship between changing the ignition coils and your more recent symptoms. Ignoring those for the moment, a successful cold start and a stall once the engine is hot sounds like your crankshaft position sensor. There are several threads discussing these. Does it start again after a 10-15 minute cool down period?

Oh, I wasn't trying to connect the two, just that it happened right after the other. The engine starts back up immediately. I replaced the camshaft position sensor a little less than a year ago, so I hope that isnt it. It also feels like it drains energy when I use the windows or the A/C, and today when I was driving, low speed, it felt like it wanted to stall, you know, rpms surging. Also, there's no check engine light on, I believe it was on when I replaced the position sensor. Thanks again.

I did a little more reading, sorry, I see there's a difference between the two. I'm ordering a crank position sensor now. Thanks

The abbreviations are confusing. CPS should always mean camshaft and KPS crankshaft. From what I've read the KPS is by far the more commion failure.

If you notice a current drain when using windows or A/C I think you might be spot on regarding the alternator diagnosis. That is if you have the proper battery installed correctly.

Well...

I am in agreement with M-Man, you may have a couple of things going on.

Check the stickies under CPS sensor replacement..if you are saying this was changed about 1 year ago, if that was not the OE part but non-mname equivalent your current failure would be right about on schedule. The OE part will go out another 100K. A CPS that is failing will cause the car to shut down like a cut off switch, often coming to a stop, and also commonly cause start up problems when warm. These problems happen more and more often as the CPS progressively fails.

If it feels your engine is "cking" coming to a braked stop, and the RPM's drop like it's going to die, but catches itself..and progressively gets worse, then that could be a sysmptom from a failing MAF.. you have to watch out for a LOT of knock off and rip off low prices internet MAF's, if you go to replace buy from a reputable source like oft mentioned vendors here on this forum like autohausaz.com

Keep the faith !

Ok..I replaced the KPS, and I'm still having the same problem..when the temp guage get around 80-100, it shuts off at stops. I have to keep my foot on both gas & brake, and it still feels like it's trying to shut off. And when it does, the ASR and battery lights come on.

So, do I go to the MAF next, or are there any other ideas? Thanks in advance.

No error codes are coming up. The last code I got was for the cylinder 3 ignition coil, which I guess is unrelated. When it stalls, the ARS and battery light come on, but that's all.

The lights that come on when it stalls are typical since voltage drops, so ignore that.

There is no such thing as a code for an ignition coil; I have no idea what you mean.

What *exactly* are you doing to check for codes?

The code was P0303 - Cylinder 3 misfire. I changed the ignition coil and it went away..I don't think it is related to the issue I'm having now. I check for codes at Autozone, but there is no CEL on, so I haven't checked for anything since the P0303 code was cleared a couple weeks ago.
