01 E430 CAT Replacement Options

Earlier posts for this generated responses leaning towards the Magnaflow 5300 series. I checked the Magnaflow site and there's a lot of universal fittings that they offer. Which ones will work with my car? I'm specifically interested with inlet and outlet diameters.

Apparently, a muffler shop will weld this Magnaflow unit onto my current exhaust system. Don't they have to take the whole thing out to perform this welding?

Also, when I look at the pics of the OEM CAT system, there's a module between the O2 sensors - I'm hoping that this is where my rattling is coming from. How about that other CAT looking thing downstream of the aft O2 sensor? Do I have to replace that too?

I know, lots of Qs, but I have no idea what I'm getting into and i just can't justify dropping the car at the dealer for $4k+ for both CATS, when the car sits in the garage most of the time.

Thanks fellas.

Don't mean to go off topic for you. But how would an E320 sound with no muffler or cats, or just straight pipe the whole thing? Both of mine rattle and I don't feel like replacing with OEM.

I replaced the rear cats with a Magnaflo 53005. The old CAT can be cut out and the new welded in place. Can't speak to the front cats.

Without front cats, you will get a CEL. The rear cat is downstream of the o2 sensors, so the car won't know it's gone. You may not be able to pass smog without it though.

I have no smog testing in my state. I'm just wondering if getting rid of the cats or muffler is safe for my car.

I did mine a week ago and have experienced no ill affects. My plan was to replace the rear cat but the muffler shop recomended replacemnt with a straight pipe, they claimed to have done this before. Thus far no codes and the system did not get any louder. It passed emissions a few months ago with the old scrambled cat so I'm not too worried about that issue.

I think you're pretty safe getting rid of the rear cats and center muffler. Without the front cats though, you'll throw a CEL and may wind up with problems as the engine management system is looking for certain values from the o2 sensors downstream of the front cats.

Hmmm, center muffler? That's not the muffler at the end underneath the bumper?

Also, how do you guys think the V6 would sound with this type of exhaust? No rear cats, no muffler?

Center muffler is what the EPC calls the Resonator.

Besides the connecting pipes, the 112/113 exhaust systems have four catalytic converters, one resonator and one muffler. If you remove the resonator and the muffler as well as the rear cats, it will probably be pretty noisy. It's a well designed free-flowing system (if all is working correctly), and particularly so on the V6, so you're not going to gain any meaningful power.

The standard disclaimer applies, too: even if your location doesn't have smog checks, it is a civil and criminal violation of federal law to remove the cats. The odds of being caught are low, at least now, but as we get more greenies in government, that could change.

Socialism is a philosophy of failure, the creed of ignorance, and the gospel of envy; its inherent virtue is the equal sharing of misery. (Winston Churchill)

Oh ok. I don't mind not gaining power, doesn't matter to me. I'd just like more of a "raw" sound. How would it sound with no rear cats and no resonator?
