Lamp Defective message

Hi, folks.
Recently, my car had this Lamp Defective message now and then. It happens randomly like once every month when the weather is cold or it's raining. Sometimes after shuting off car and restarting, the error would not appear, but sometimes it does reappear. It happens when I am turnning the light switch.
I have checked all possible lights, and all lights seems to fine. I have even hooked an OBD II reader, but it reads no error even when the car is running and error on dash.
Have someone experienced this? Or shall I just live with it and ignore this occasional error?
Thanks for you help.

check your tail lamps. its pretty common for the bulbs to get real hot and melt the carrier around where the bulb seats. this causes an intermittent defective lamp message.

I already did, I even take the bulb off the socket and put it back, then snap the whole socket back to the tail light. BTW, the left rear fog light is also functioning.

its much easier with an sds since it tells you exactly which light is the one that set the malfunction message. have you checked your headlamps?

Yes, I checked head lamps, signal lamps (front and rear), side lamps (left and right side of front bumper), front and rear fog lamps, and even door lamps as well as license plate lamp. All are fine.

Unfortunately, I don't have the star diagnose system. I do have a mechanic working in MB dealer, but I doubt I could reproduce the problem when I meet him for maintainance.

Thanks for you help though.

you dont have to reproduce the problem. the message sets what is called an "event". in this case it will be a stored event (as opposed to a current one, which of course means the fault is present). have him take a look at it and he should be able to tell you which bulb is the culprit. if there is ton of events, just have him clear it and recheck the next time you get the message.

Maybe it's the tail light. I just tried, although all lights seems to be working, but one of the tail light socket could not be snapped off the assemble. Although I could turn it, but not as far as the corresponding socket that could be snapped off from the other socket.
Damn.

I get this message all the time when I press the brake pedal every once in a while, I guess sometimes the contact doesn't work and it triggers an error message. Tail lights are very temperamental on these cars!

To the last post

Mr Rat, the symptoms you are describing are identical to a failing/sporadic brake light switch.. replace with a OE switch (not a lower priced China knockoff) which should be about $15 at your dealer. See the stickies for replacement instructions, it's a easy DIY. Full failure of this switch causes other issues. Keep the beat !

Yes, it is the connection problem, most likely some of the tail light sockets are rusting especially near the connection between the bulbs and the socket. Clean all those and try again. Otherwise, check the number plate lights as well.
