This is tricky question.
No passenger car in US is rated more than 1500 lb towing.
That become political issue, since to my knowledge MB wagons in Europe have 5000 lb tow ratings.
Best way to find "politically correct" answer is to call MBUSA.

Ditto. Use 800-FOR-MERC.

Hah, I see E-classes towing huge trailers here all the time. I think the class they are in is 3000+, at the least.

This is the hitch for a wagon with 2200 kg ratings, what is about 4500 lb.
Even if you pay the big bucks to get it to US, it is not having US attests

Even the smallest

v6 2.4 w210 is rated at 1900Kg in other countries so call the dealer.
We towed over 2k no problems when we used the wagon as a tow vehicle.

general questions:

1. I thought trailer and load could never exceed weight of vehicle

2. what about tongue weight. I would think the rear end would sag
like an old woman with more than 300 lbs.

ford f150

gross weight 7000lbs.
max towing capacity 9500lbs
and tongue wt is the balanced weight above the ball.Wagons self leveling suspension helps out in the w210
So you see by rating and torque of engine you can pull more than you weigh.
Get a secondary trans cooler if doing a lot of towing.

ML350 weighs 2 tons, while in Europe they are rated for 3.5 tons towing.
Semi truck weight just few tons, while is pulling 40 tons trailers and in extreme applications several hundreds tons.
There is much more in towing than the "body weight"
US pickups generally make lousy towing vehicles due to long rear overhangs and soft suspension.
Lot of accidents with them involve "fishtailing" when the trailer is pushing the pickup sideways and the driver is not able to correct the movement.
The only good way you can use their towing capacity is 5-th wheel of goose-neck trailer
