Removal of stock radio without keys

Hi,

I just bought a 96 e320 with ~60k miles on it, im new to this forum and i would like to say that i like it very much, and im sure that i will use alot of time here.

Im especially fond of the DiY section, its great that people take their time to post in here so other people can solve their problems

Altho i did not find what i was looking for, so im posting here.

I want to remove my stock radio, and i bought the removal keys but they dont work. They just go all the way in, and i can pull them right out again, no loosening af the radio. Is there anyway i can remove the radio without the keys?

Thanks alot for any answers, and sorry if theres any grammar or language problems

Since the removal kwy is already stuck there, your radio should be free to move. try to gently pry the radio out from the corners. If unsuccessful, you need to remove the lower compartment boxes and undo the clip from inside the centre panel

Did you buy OE keys or ebay? Some of the aftermarket keys don't "lock in" to the radio, they just release the tabs. Then you have to find out how to pull on the radio. If they aren't hitting the tabs, then they are the wrong keys.

Please click the user cp link and complete your bw profile for vehicle and location as that is often useful information.

Take care and enjoy the ride,
Greg

Well, they are not stuck in there, they just go freely in and out without any clicking/snapping or anything

I tried three different kinds, one set was a bit longer that the other, both with the quarter circles at the end. The third set i tried was square. I didnt actually try to pull the radio out while the keys where in, but it didnt really seem like they had any affect at all, but i will give it a try.

Try flipping the keys around

You might try flipping the keys around - meaning the straight edge of the keys on both side goes towards the inside, the rounded edges towards the outside.

eBay will give you a pci of the keys to see what I mean.

Some have even used "flat metal nail files" to unlock the tabs inside.

Good luck !

I think the straight side should be at outside. I bought it from ebay some time ago and it worked perfectly.

remove the shifter cover first, then you see 2 screws holding the cigarette lighter (12V socket) box, remove those screws and the box would come out.
the box above is held by a clip on the top of the box in the centre, you can reach this clip from below and back, pull the clip towards the floor and then this box is loosened. then see from below to remove radio

some of the pic here may help

Thanks for all the replies, i finally got the radio out, it turns out that the previous owner had bent the clips that lock the radio in place.

I took out the ashtray and the compartment on top of it but it didnt really help me, since the radio slot is sealed of in a plastic case. So i had to destroy the radio in order to remove the mangled clips holding it in place.

Thanks alot for the help guys
