Very loud knocking sound from engine at start-up.

MY 2000 E320 60K miles. We travelled to Europe for a week and left the car at an airport parking where they move cars around.

Came back this morning (7 days later), started the car up and a very scary, loud knocking sound came from the engine. I shut it off immediately and asked the attendant what the h*ll happened to my car. He said they parked the car there last night and there was nothing wrong with it. I started her up again, same noise. It came from the head, towards the back of the engine. I shut her off again, checked the oil, no leakage, normal level. I started again, the noise somewhat subsided and slowly disappeared in less than a minute. They said they didn't touch the engine, they just parked the car there. I drove home (about 100 miles) and everything is fine, so far. I will not drive it over the weekend, the next time I will start it up will be on Monday.

It sounded like an engine running without any oil in it, or having a bearing problem. I checked the oil level, it is down just a bit, maybe 1/4 quart/liter. I thought maybe the valve in the oil filter housing is defective and all the oil from the head leaked back to the engine hence the dry running on start-up. I had parked the car for 3 - 4 days before and have never experienced this problem.

I had owned a couple of Benzes and parked them for 2 weeks at a time and never a problem when starting up. Any idea as to what caused the sudden dry running? If indeed that is what it was, but the fact that the sound disappeared soon after starting her the third time makes me believe that it was a lubrication problem.
Out side temperature is above freezing, according to the mileage they didn't drive the anywhere except shuttling between their parking lots.

I got home around 3pm and parked the car. Just went down to start her, it is 10:30pm now, and it runs just fine.

Any ideas would be appreciated.

Alex

We have our MB sitting for 5 weeks all the time with no ill effects.
The only thing that poops into mine mind is that leaky injector flooded the cylinder and was on the edge of hydraulic lock.
Did you record the mileage before leaving the car at parking lot? What is the guarantee the parking attendant didn't take it for joy ride?

Is it a diesel? If so might be one or few glow plugs that are gone.

No the 2000 E320 is a Gasser...

Sounds like from them running the engine for extremely short stints (to just move the car around) that not enough oil pressure was built up in the engine on top of all the oil draining out of the engine into the pan while it sat for long periods that it just needed to get the oil flowing again.

Do the 6's have oil feed tubes? Maybe one of them has failed like the 420's do......... Just a thought.

It is not a diesel, it runs on gas.
The mileage looked about right, I didn't actually write it down before leaving the car.
What are symptoms of a leaking injector?

Well, it will sit for the weekend and I will see if the problem reoccurs on Monday morning.

It has another problem as well with excessive shaking when started cold. It is more noticeable when in gear and doesn't disappear even after driving on the highway for 30 minutes. It is more apparent in cold ambient temperatures. Any ideas?
Car is well maintained and driven normally including the occasional "Italian tune-up", i.e. driving over 180km/hour speed.

Thanks for the input/ideas.

Get infra-red thermometer and compare the temperatures of each cylinder. That might pinpoint bad cylinder/injector.

If it cleared up

and you have no codes showing,it could be that simply sitting caused some fuel to sit in an injector and leak into a cylinder.Starting the engine caused the disruption in the firing order.
Run a can of seafoam injector cleaner through the tank when it is half full and keep us posted if any check engine lights come on or the problem returns.
I doubt it will

Be wary of classifying this noise as the oil passages failure. Try the Seafoam route, take two aspirin and call us in the morning...

Well, you guys are rather optimistic. :-) I will drive the wife's A160 on Monday (as it has been sitting for almost ten days and the battery needs charging) and start up the E320 on Tuesday. I will post any negative result.
