Need Help!!! Serpentine belt came off my car!!!

I have a 1999 e320 4matic with a big problem. I was driving back home today and check engine oil light when on. Then my power steering went out and the car started to smoke. so I pulled off the road and checked everything. The serpentine belt came off and there was oil everywhere. There was oil all over the floor. I honestly don't know why the serpentine belt came off??? The car has 72k and I never had any problems with it until now. Has anyone have this problem before? I think The engine was overheated and blew the head gasket. I am not sure though because it is dark out now and the car is still at the location. If anyone can me help please do!!!

Welcome to the forum and sorry about the circumstances.
While I can't take a look under the hood, I can say that overheating is not likely. You would see red warning before and supposable the computer would kill the engine before heat might damage it.
My very remote guess is, that something broke on your engine (power steering pump?) and that is what cost the belt to come off.
Keep us posted and good luck.

Something

seized up.Had the harmonic balancer recall ever been performed?
Get a flashlight and look down at the front lower part of the engine, where the main pulley is located. Is it all cattywhompas and torn into the oil pan? Their in lies your massive oil leak.If you have it towed home follow the procedure for towing a 4matic in your owners manual or have it loaded on a flat bed.You need not add insult to injury
ohlord
sorry

The belt came off because it was covered in oil.

I Would also inspect the crank pulley as they are a known problem to separate and the outer ring of the H/B will grind up the front cover of the engine block and cause a oil leak..Then the belt comes off..as the mono belt will NOT come off due to oil on it..Thats what the belt tensioner does..Keep the belt tight

Done a couple of them...

MB has changed the part number on them..make sure you get the latest one!

Thanks for replying,
the tensioner was my next guess, maybe it was a little loose who knows. Thanks for the info on the oil leak.

I have to agree with Kent. The belt has ridges which engage grooves on the accessory pulleys EXCEPT on the tensioner where the back of the belt (smooth) rides on the smooth pulley. A little oil and I think off it jumps!

Smoke

oil everywhere, oil on the floor,is not a jumped belt from a little oil on the belt. The oil got there somehow and it either was a catastrophic failure or someone change the oil and failed to tighten the oil filter cap and the oil purged itself
He will find out soon enough.I hope it is the latter, and not the HB.
