When I look at a MB over 100K, I seriously have the tranny looked at hard as part of the PPI, and change tranny fluid/fliter as the very first thing.
I bought a 99 E55 this past summer with 105K on the clock, very-very pleased with that buy, and when we replaced the tranny fluid that same week - I was literraly under the car with my MB tech (this I did at my local MB dealer) and when we were botj looking/smelling/feeling the fluid as it came out (warm and not hot) we both looked at each other and said "good, caught that in time".
Both my MB dealer and my indie won't let me buy dipsticks for my cars - they both say "whenever you need us, we are right here to check it for you" - very good guys.
I have 6 MB's in my "country barn" here 3-W163's including my gal's, 1-W210 E55, 1-W140 S500, and 1-W126 560SEC. I call my MB dealer and my MB indie (who is borhter-in-law of the dealer) "my heroin dealers". I am fortunate my cars here are paid-in-full so I get my kick in driving and my own brand of being freaky/righeous in my way on maintainence and service.

#1 rule in the oil servicing
"Don't judge the oil by it looks".
rule in 722.6 fluid if it is black from graphite build up,it is past due for a change whether it has been overheated, abused,or over miles, the sensors need it clean, the valve body requires it to be of the proper flow and viscosity and if everyone had changed it at 39000 like the dealer changed the specs on the w211 722.6 service sheet,we would have far fewer people posting in the tolls of death for their dearly departed heavenly 5 speedsohlord

If you have a dealer and an indie that won't sell you a dipstick, either you don't mind paying to have them do your work for you.Or they just like taking your money. My old adage holds true ,whenever I hear someone say "MY Dealer or My Indie"I know where "Their Wallet resides"

It's a little humor between them and me.. I see them frequently enough, not like a overstaying party guest or dealer rat, but I am by regularly on one thing or another when I am in town.
I haven't put in a lift (yet) so underside work I generally leave up to one or the other... topside and interior stuff is my domain..as well as major parts are my side...
You know I have kept track of your valuable posts on the other the other model forums and you must be an accomplished diy'r to not trust to fate trans fluid at 100k.I borrow a lift and we are installing a pit

Kajtek,
What is the recommended gearbox oil change interval on your W211 7-speed? Since MB don't have to worry about law suits since it's a different gearbox, it would be interesting to know if they've changed their recommendation.

My W211 is 5-speed.
The service manual in 14-levels of service doesn't list transmission service.
It does mention
"US service 8 at 150,000 miles or 5 years:
Engine compartment
Replace coolant"
Haven't read in W211 section about anybody ever servicing the transmission, but the owners there are different kind of guys, than here.
where are different guys than the owners here?
W211 service for the 722.6 Mercedes shop check off sheet Change fluid and filter at 39,000 miles.
Maybe you don't need to pay heed to the service intervals and never changing brake fluid in California because the humidity is so low carries over to not needing to change transmission fluid and filterI would not recommend it as a common practice to follow where the other guys live, where ever that is
It is different market in each state. Texas has dry weather, so corrosion there is non existent. However to my experience cars from Texas are often coming with neglected repairs, since there is not too many qualify MB mechanics there and they charge arm and leg.
Florida has dry weather inland, but beware of the car that might be parked close to the Ocean. Lot of retired people own MB in Florida and those cars are more likely pampered to the extreme.
Than there are exceptions to everything.
