I feel a bit of a clunk when you take your foot completly off the gas slow to about 5-15 MPH then a second later slowly take off. the trans fluid is only a few thousand miles old, flex disk looks good on visual, any ideas?
the rear diff fluid?
it gets old and tired also
check your motor mounts.

My friends all drive Porsches

Worked hard all my lifetime
no help from my friends
So Lord, won't you buy me

I’ve been experiencing this problem ever since I bought my 4Matic almost three years ago.
Clunk occurs when the car downshifts into first gear as you're rolling to a stop. I found that by switching transmission program into W mode permanently helps a lot. You don’t get to hear the clunk that often.
There are a few threads on the forums on the topic but for some reason word never spread out as to the cause and fix of the problem, which has been posted only a couple of times without any major public reaction. See:
Slack in the planetary gearset: the recommended repair under TSB AF28_10-U-1600AG is to replace the planetary gearset with a friction plate.
Hope it helps.
Cheers.

that (planetary gear work) won't be done on this car
I've decided to be very careful about spending too much on this wagon.
I just ran into more corrosion underneath than I thought when I changed the D oil this afternoon. Hopefully the Diff oil change at least helps maintain the current condition, which I can live with.
In the last three months I've spent about $3K on tires, shocks, control arm bushings, 4wheel alignment, CV boot, ball joints, extra key, windshield, blower motor, filters, etc...
But you know how it is when the car has 120K and you start fixing things, it's easy to just keep going.
Now, other than the occasional clunk and corrosion, the car runs very nice and tight, still gets great MPG. I hope to get another 2-3 years out of it then move on.
changed the diff oil one week ago and wanted to give it a fair test.
It came out very dark, but nothing to unusual looking
I don't notice any of the clunk sounds or feel nearly as much. it's very smooth.
For anyone else with this issue that's the first place to start.
I don't know what the spec is on replacement, my wagon has 120K and it definetly needed changing.
My car did this when the engine mounts were failing. After replacing them the clunk stopped. You might want to check and see if they have been leaking.
I had a similar issue and my indie said it was the rear Diff. and to just check fluid twice a year...... It would always clunk a bit at certain times. THEN, car suddenly lost drive to the wheels, loud clack, clack, clack, clack under feet. slowed to a stop, put it in park, it kept rolling.... figuring a tran. issue..... local guy sent car to transmission house for a used w/ 1 year warranty for 3500 big ones. not bad as car has 210k and no major repairs yet ! Luckily, tranny guy found front wheel drive U-Joint let go. had to wait for part to check tranny, then sent car back not needing tranny, only u-joint... $800. not $3500. Nice to know my guy is honest, most would replace tranny anyway to get the cash......... So, U-joint was causing the clunk and my other very good indie missed it !
