well i went and got my Harbor freight OBDII, plugged her in and pulled a P0100 code. from what i read thats the MAF but why no CEL? The car hesitates and sometimes lurches as i go so i wonder what it would take to trip that CEL.
anywwho... i'll be looking for a new MAF on ebay but does someone have the official part number for a 1997 E420 MAF or a better source for the MAF.
clean the maf per the diy with crc brand maf cleaner and make sure you plug it in fully. The pending code if it does not repeat will clear itself if it was a temporary condition.
do not buy a maf off of ebay. Your Parts Search Returned 1 Part(s)
check the harness and clean it before tossing in a new one.change your fuel filter and air filter.that alone can trip a pending p0100.

My friends all drive Porsches
I must make amends
Worked hard all my lifetime
no help from my friends
So Lord, won't you buy me
a Mercedes Benz"

thank you.
Hey, diego, how's chi-town?
Transient codes will store without triggering the CEL. For that one it is possibly the MAF itself, but may just be a connection (classic MAF codes are fuel trim codes for both banks). Also it might just be dirty. Get a can of CRC MAF cleaner, reference the DIY and remove the insert and clean it, blast some into the connector, be sure to let it dry.
If you do have to replace the MAF, I can't caution you strongly enough NOT to source it from ebay. Good prices but replicas and knock-offs, may do more harm than good. Genuine Bosch at autohausaz.com for about $160, full warranty and free shipping.
Take care and enjoy the ride,
Greg

Hey Greg,
Chi-town still sucks and getting suckier, i cant take the congestion anylonger and now that Daley is hell bent on making the city a walking town with high taxes on all cars everywhere you turn, i'm turning to S.C in a few years, cleaner air, less congestion and great roads to run on...
thanks for the suggestions on the MAF, i'll try to clean it and follow your DIY eventhough its not for my engine i'm sure i'll figure it out, thanks again for all your great info!
maf is about $280.orphan engine owners get screwed
with the "orphan" again... The MAF insert is available at no significant premium if you know the right sources.
The M119, "orphan" is still favored by many, BTW. My '93 400E had 205K on the clock when I sold it, and I added no oil between standard service intervals, which is more than can be said for many significantly lower mileage M112 engines that I read about on this forum.
Robb, you can remove your foot from your mouth now...

Mine has 140K with no issues, well other than my MAF, but certainly has been a trouble free engine compared to my Audi A8. This car has caused me a wonderment, what the hell do i do with it, i've never owned a car with this many miles and it keeps going and going and i dont know who to give it to within my family when i'll force myself to purchase a newer model, i'd hate to see what they may do to it so i guess i'll have to add on to my garage.
i'm soooo scared to have the trans fluid changed, she just runs soooo smooth
is no source for the insert on the 420.Bosch has none, germanstar has none and the best price around for a real(not chinese fake clone is autohausaz.com)
And everyone knows I affectionately call it the orphan engine out of sympathy that it got hung out to dry in that one year cycle during the change over.
