2001 E320 Oil Overfill Warning

Bought a used E320 for our daughter, our mechanic said it looked good. Immediately we started getting warning sayine Oil Overfilled, maintenance guide said this could cause engine damage. Took to dealer and they said oil is not overfilled. Warning does not come on everytime but a good majority of time driven. Sometimes right away, sometimes after a few miles.

Could this be a sensor or something?

Thanks.

Could be a sensor. I had this warning too when the tech filled mine to the upper limit on the dipstick for the oil consumption test I had done. The dealer assured me I could drive it with no problems and said my sensor was fine. Hope this helps.

Thank you. We just got the car and I feel it is hard to believe this just came about from the time we drove off the lot. If it was an existing issue they had to have known about it from the way they told us they went over this car. We took it back and of course the warning would not come on for them.

The oil level sensor sounds like its defective...I have replace several for this complaint
If you check the oil level WARM and its NOT over filled ..then the sensor is defective

This might not be ideal, but have you considered doing a drain and fill for the oil? that way you know for sure how much oil is in the system. considering it's used, you may be due for one anyway, unless you know the last time the oil was changed.

At least check what the FSS counter says when your next scheduled service is due by using either of the +/- buttons on the steering wheel. If it's functioning properly, that will give you a good idea about the quality of the oil.

I bought a 2001 Wagon from a leasing company in Austin and drove it home to Albuquerque with the high oil level warning.

Seller was sure it was a "sensor."

It was overfilled.

No damage.

Of course it matters how much.

First

don't go to the dealer. If you don't diy find a good independent mb shop.
Change your oil
MercedesShopWiki: OilFilter2
with proper 0w40 mobil1 syn
even if you know the service history they may have installed heavy weight oil to control other issues and that is triggering the sensor to indicate a overfill warning.Probably not an issue but you will only find out once you have properly done the oil change and checked oil level.

Exclamation

Why all the discussion about changing the oil?

First step for me would be to drive the car until it is warm, then park on level ground. Wait 5 minutes for the oil to drain down and settle and then -- horror of horrors -- use the dipstick and check the actual oil level in the engine.

If it is at or near (but still below) the edge of the full section, then this is an anomaly or you have a bad sensor or a shorting wire or bad connection to the sensor.

If it is over the full section, then you need to suck some out of there. Period.
Overfilling is in some cases worse than underfilling, foaming, frothy oil is a horrible lubricant and also contributes to overheating.

So ignore the dash and physically check the oil, then go from there.

Take care and enjoy the ride,
Greg
