Smile At wits end

Hello everyone. I am having a problem with my front driver and passenger windows. They are not operational. I have read all the post about reseting by taking the negative battery cable off and depressing the brake pedal for 30 seconds. None of that is working. Is there a fuse that controls the windows or the switches for the windows in the center console? BTW it is a 98 e320. Please help.

This has been covered before, but once you disconnect the battery you have to re-synchronize the one-touch system for EACH window (I don't do this for the back to help reduce the loss of regulators!).

The window switches have FIVE positions: neutral (off), toggle down, toggle up, full down and full up (these latter two are the one-touch modes). There is a VERY soft detent between toggle down and full down, and toggle up and full up. If you pass that detent, you're in the "one touch" full mode, and until the window is synchronized, that position does absolutely NOTHING. Thus, if you're just mashing on the button after disconnecting the battery, guess what? Your windows won't move.

So the starting point would be to gently rock one window switch to the first position (toggle down or toggle up depending on the window's present position) and see if the window moves. If it does then follow the procedure in your manual to re-synchronize each window and then the switch will work normally.

So double and triple confirm that first, then post back if none of the switches are working in the single-detent "toggle" position.

Take care and enjoy the ride,
Greg

Do the rear

windows operate?
If the battery reset was going to work at all,the windows would open and close even if they were not in sync.Check fuses under the rear pass seat, front drivers and front pass windows are controlled by the same fuse.
Fuse chart is located in a little holder by the fuses or you can look in the diy electrical section for a fuse chart.Never test a fuse with the key in the ignition, get a multimeter and check continuity by pulling the fuse in question and testing it.

...But ONLY if he's careful about how far he is pressing the button...which is why I tried to stress that so much.

I knew about re syncing the windows and all that. What happen was after I re syncd the windows was once I restarted the car they just started to go down by themselves. I think I have an electrical short somewhere but with me not being that familiar with the electronics I dont really know where to start. I'm just trying to save myself some $$$. Because I think this is about to turn into a nightmare.

Ah, thanks for the clarification.

Have you checked under the back seat for moisture/water?

Well there was once that my wife left the bck windows down. however, I dried all that out with a wet vac and I let it air out about 4 - 5 days. And it hadnt been doing anything like that. I would get the occassional situation where the windows wouldn't go up or down but that was usually remedied by the reset. Any thoughts? And can someone tell me the exact fuse that handles the windows? That list is confusing to me.
