did you run the onboard diagnostics for the a/c system?
How to Diagnose Air Conditioning Malfunctions | EclassBenz.com
and compare the digital engine coolant temp to the one on the dash cluster?
Did you use zerex GO5 in a 50/50 mix?Have you made sure all air is out of the coolant system?Did this problem exist before the coolant change?
Last what do you consider hot?
cool weather temps run around 80c and warmer summer temps in traffic can climb up towards the 95-100 c mark. You are sitting there with no air movement and it will climb.

Since the fan starts at full speed for the test program, it is unlikely that there is a problem with the fan or its controller. I cannot explain the reading at #20.

Monitor reading #7 while the engine is idling on a warm day. The reading should increase to 14, whereupon the auxiliary fan starts on low. The fan stops if the reading goes below 11. Ensure that the fan does start with this demand, although I've only heard of a failure mode that also prevents the fan test from working as expected.

Additional demands for the auxiliary fan are refrigerant temperature and engine coolant temperature, but I don't recall the trigger points.

Thanks guys for all the effort to provide me some assistance. Let me try to answer your questions...

I did run the diagnostics on the climate control system, but the only reading I checked was #20. The reading for that diagnostic was 21.1.

I used Zerex G-05 but probably less than a 50/50 mix, I know, bad idea, but it wasnt quite as hot a month ago as it has been lately.

It was running over 80C before the coolant change, which was one of the reasons I decided to change it.

I tried to make sure to fill as much as it would possibly take without creating any air bubbles in the system, however, I didn't really know how to achieve this.

To drain the coolant, I couldn't find the engine block drain plug, so I just used the petcock on the bottom of the radiator. I flushed with like 2 gallons of distilled water, then closed it up, and disconnected the upper radiator hose to fill the radiator back up. I then connected the hose back to the engine block, and disconnected it at the radiator (probably should have done in reverse) but then filled into the engine block through the hose. I tried squeezing the upper hose after filling with the expansion tank open to force any air pockets out.

When I say hot, it probably does fall into the range you described Ohlord, somewhere up towards 95-100C. But it kinda seems to take far less time to get up to temp.

Although I may be imagining things, and it may have more to do with the higher temps lately.

I actually have had my girlfriend driving it the last week, since she has a straight shot of highway to drive with no traffic, to keep it from overheating.

I have recently been referred to a supposed excellent indy mechanic, so I might take it over and have him give it the once over to see what he can decipher.

If it weren't for you guys I would feel pretty lost.....

Just something on the electric fan(s). If it is getting hot while driving at speed, it is not a problem with the electrical fan (or even mechanical fan). The fan only have an effect when standing still or driving slow. Once the speed exceeds about 25 MPH the normal airflow is much more than any fan can produce.

What do i know but i would say dont worry about it. On a regular basis i drive my 97 e420 and a 02 s500 (dealer maintained for everything) and they both get hot in warm weather. I live in Boston and am regularly stuck in stop and go traffic. I created a thread a few months back asking why my temp gauge was climbing to the 3/4 mark about 100 and i did everything checked everything and went to the dealer where they then told me it was normal operating temp in hot weather and stop and go traffic. Both cars do it and i have no fear anymore. Hold the auto button down until you come to the 1 then press the rest button until 6 (someone correct me if im wrong please) this is your temp. Be nervous if it is over 104.

My car also shoots up from the 1/2 mark on the temp gauge to the 3/4 mark in about ten minutes in hot boston traffic.

It's the REST button that you hold for >5 seconds to bring up current-sensor-readout mode.
