I just picked up another 99 E300 (had one a few years ago) and had a question with regards to a very slight shimmy or vibration when I hit between70-80mph. When I am under acceleration, coasting, or steady cruise on a flat surface, I get a slight shimmy for about 5-10 seconds then it mellows out perfectly. About another 20-30 seconds of smooth riding, then vibration will kick in for another 5-10 seconds. I feel it in the driver seat, the steering wheel, and I can watch the empty passenger's seat head restrain shake like a leaf! This issue happens over and over between that speed range. If I am under 70mph, I am golden!
Could this be as basic as needing a good 4-wheel alignment, tire rotation, and balance? The car has brand new Michelin MXV4's, which I had on my last E300 and these are fantastic tires. I don't believe it is the motor mounts as they were replaced last year. I had to replace the mounts in my last car, which shook like hell all the time until they were replaced! Anyone with some advice to give until I can take my car into the MB dealer next week?
hey buddy, I once had an issue where my steering wheel would noticeably shake between 60-70mph, as well as noticeable vibrations through the seat and forget about looking out the rear view mirror! Turned out the gas station i used to pump up my tires was spraying water with its air! I had a good amount of water in my tires causing a major imbalance headache. I'd definitely start with a balance/rotate (if you don't have staggered wheels that is!). The alignment won't change a thing. You don't need an alignment unless your car is pulling to one side or another. Get the tires balanced. If you put the car in neutral and rev up the motor do you feel any vibrations? if the answer is no then that should eliminate your trans/engine mounts from the picture. Only other real option would be a driveshaft imbalance/bend but this is improbable if you haven't damaged/ran over/hit anything.
UPDATE: OK, my issue has been resolved. Come to find out, I had 2 brand new Michelin's on the rear and 2 worn (2/32) Michelin's on the front. After removing the worn tires, installing the new, a force balance on the front, and balance at the rear, I am golden! No more shimmy or vibes!
