Hi all .. I am a new MB E Class Owner. I recently purchased an 98 E320 with 90K miles on it. The car had all dealer service records and looks like it is in a decent shape. There are some surface rust spots which I will be taking care of but nothing too serious. Its Black.
This is my first German car. I have always had Japanese - Honda, Toyota, Mazda and Acura. Hope it will be a good experience. I intend to keep the merc stock except for the rims. I want to install AMG Monoblocks on it - 18". Havent had any luck finding them here in Toronto.
Also direct me to any local Mercedes forums. Looking forward to the experience. And.. Generally how reliable are these machines ? I have heard a lot of good things about the 3.2 Litre Engine.
You come to the right place. This section is very active. With my "New" W211 I can't get much response.
Cars are mechanically very reliable. Electronics is another story. Don't spill coffee on your gear shifter and get the car undercoated. One member from Toronto is having serious corrosion on his.
Welcome and enjoy the ride.
I have the same year car and she's been great - no major problem. You'll enjoy the drive much more than with the other cars.
At that mileage, look like you're ready for a spark plug, ATF, Coolant change if needed. Be on the look out for the CPS replacement, Canada road salt may give you rust problem.
Welcome aboard, atif7x7. Lots of great information up in the stickies at the top of this forum, including posts about common problem areas and the great DIY threads. If you don't see an ATF service in the records do it now, or sooner if that's possible. You can do yours yourself, in that year you have a drain plug in the converter to get most of it out.
Definitely agree you need new wheels. (Those are still good for the winter tires, though, no reason to mess up nice monoblocks!).
Take care and enjoy the ride,
Greg

eBay is your friend. My E320 has stock rims but I bumped up to a 16" on my C280 from the stock 15". I found a set of CLK rims with decent tires on eBay for $400 plus shipping (which cost about $150 from Florida IIRC). Even after paying taxes at the border and accounting for the C$/US$ difference at the time (.68 in 2003) it still only set me back $1000. Now with the dollar bascially at par you'd save yourself even more. The same set of rims from the dealer was going to cost $1600 new plus tires.
