I just noticed that when I shift into any gear but R and N, there seems to be a "loose something" under the shifter - as if a bolt/plate/piece is loose. No rattles, but there is a definite resistance before it clicks into place and it's definitely noisier than before. Any clues? I plan to take out the trim and look inside this weekend.

are all controlled by the mechanical linkage.When you slap it over to manual mode it is electronic.Check the shifter bushing,they wear out ,get sloppy and make noise come up into the cabin.
