Rack Boot Replacement

I was backing out a friends concrete driveway when I drove over a broken piece that popped up and tore my boot. Obviously now p/s fulid is leaking and I need to replace it. Is there anything special I need to consider when doing so?

Obviously, you want to ensure that the tie rod end is at the same place. I would mark the tie rod and end so that I know how far to thread the end, and get it at the right angle (partial turn on the threads).

Also, there is a special tool to set the clamps.

What is this tool you speak of?

I can't remember the name of the tool. It is probably the same tool that is used for CV boot clamps.

Now that I think about it...should there be any fluid leaking out? Would that mean that my r&p seal is damaged thus requiring me to replace the unit?

the Mercedes design is similar to most other racks, the boot is there to protect the rack's shaft and seals from being damaged by dirt/grit, etc., and is not intended to hold fluid.

You may have a larger problem there...

Good luck,

JR

That is what I thought (after the fact). I looked on AutoHaus for a r&p but couldn't find one. What is another recommended parts supplier? Thanks all for the help.

Now that I have deducted that the steering rack seal is damaged, is it possible to replace the seal?

How much fluid is leaking? Certainly, some fluid retained in the boot should not be a sign for alarm. It was working properly before the boot tore, right?
