Why E320 CDI not shipped in USA

Im just curious, ML 400CDI and 270CDI was made in Usa and maybe was used by americans but why you dont have E320CDI in W210
is there a reason?

Demand

and the biggest market for mb is california and new york and smog regulations put a halt to the import of that model.The new blue t engine is getting more approval and passing more smog regulations.

Everybody is having his theory. Last diesel MB sold new in California was in 1985 from what I know.
My theory is that in the country where big oil is having government in his pocket, they promote 7 mpg Hummers instead of 70 mpg Volkswagens, Seats, Peugeots and others.
Now when big oil overdid the greed, citizens are waking up, but it is going to take generation to change what was feed into somebody's mind.
The same apllys to "Oil change 3000" or "Coolant every 2 years"

The W211 E-Class has the new Bluetech Diesel. The last Diesel in the W210 was model year 1999. The Bluetech Diesel was not planned to go in the W210 with the W211 coming out. The US market is always different from the rest of the world because of the EPA.

Not true in 2000 there was no smog in California for diesels (and still isn't).....The reason the w210 E320 CDI was not sold in the U.S. was purely based on MBUSA not wanting to import that vehicle. In 1998 and 1999 Mercedes was slowing winding down the importation of diesels in the U.S. i.e. only 3000 models for the 1999. Gas was cheap and people wanted performance not fuel economy, now things are much different. Current California Smog regulation for selling diesels only came into effect in 2003.

Using your theory Mercedes would not have brought the CDI to the U.S. in 2005.

Mercedes has always had a diesel model E-class in the U.S. Market.

I heard that the Sulfur level in diesel in the states was not appropriate for CDI engines. This was the reason.
1999 and early diesel engines were not CDI. (Common rail Diesel Injection)
W163 ML400 CDI also ML270 CDI never sold in the states.
W210 never came with CDI in the states. It was introduced with the model W211 after 2003.
Please correct if I am mistaking

Up until recently diesels have always had a negative stigma attached to them (i.e. smelly, polluting etc)...This is why Mercedes always priced their diesel models 4-5k less than the equivalent gas model. The MSRP for a diesel w210 in 1999 was a bit north of 40k.

Mercedes did not see a market in selling these cars (only selling ~3000 of them per year if that) so they canned diesels in the U.S. market for the facelift. People who buy diesels are more or less cultish and it actually helped w210 diesel resale tremendously since you could not buy a new Mercedes Diesel in the U.S. I believe the resale value for the W210 E300 (prior to the release of the w211 E320 CDI) was the best of any used car. Most people who opted for a diesel would want a barebones commuter (meaning thin margins for MBUSA and the dealership).

MBUSA put more resources into performance oriented vehicles earlier this decade since fuel was cheap and people wanted speed and horsepower. Now with gas prices soaring, a sluggish economy, and renewed interest in biofuels Mercedes is starting to release a lot more diesel models.

ULSD only made its nationwide debut in the US in 2006 and Mercedes had been selling the 2005 E320 CDI in late 2004. Remember up until 2004 you could buy a VW TDI new in California.

Get this.
7 years ago on my vacations in Europe I was driving excelent diesel wagon. That economical, small 4-cylinder clocked (with my GPS) 225 kph in Alps (slight downhill).
It was FORD FOCUS.
That engine was never sold in USA regardless that Focus was/is extremly popular model.

Yup , I had an A6 Audi Diesel Wagon in Frankfurt , last year . 1300 miles in 16 days , it averaged 28 mpg 75% was 85 mph and higher - 4 adults - 200 lbs of bags . You cant get it here .
