Today is the day, no more offroad looking E420 running 17 inch sport wheels. I am going remove the springs, cut them with a high speed grinder, then put them back, and adjust with different pads next month as needed. The goal is drop the car around 1.2 inches...
Wow... dumbest thing I have ever heard... you are not only going to screw up the ride... but you are jeopardizing the integrity of the springs... they are made to hold a certain load... if the springs are altered in any way you run the risk of them not being able to support that load and breaking... don't forget that you are going to completely screw the rest of your suspension.
Why not get some lowering springs that are made for your car... from Eibach of H&R?
Or just replace the pads and see if that lowers it enough for you.

I really can't honestly wish you luck in doing this. People have done it and have been satisfied with it, but I still don't think it's the proper thing to do. Just get a set of springs that'll work for your wheel/tire set.

I don't see any problem as long as not overheating during the cutting process.
I haven't heard any accident or stability problem if cutting is done properly.
Personally I am happy with my car even though it sits high due to 4matic setup.
spring with a shop saw is better than a grinder.1/2 coil should do it and then adjust the pads.1/2 coil will increase the spring rate about 10% and will not harm the spring, your ride,or be a danger at all.1/2 coil max,you don't want a 20% ISR .

since those old springs have a set memory you wont have to worry about them dropping anymore before you can get it aligned.Go to the dealer and get that done soon or you will chew through those nice tires.
Les schwab in n.cal has the up to date hunter machine also.
