My wife's 1998 E320 4Matic has died while waiting on a stoplight 2 times in the past 2 weeks. Both times, she has been using the A/C - it is hot here in KC. She says all the dash lights come on with no warning message. The car starts right up with no more problems. This was about 5 minutes after leaving work both times. I did a search and found that it might be the crank position sensor? The rpm at idle is right at 500 rpm while stopped in gear. The car has 81,000 miles.
Also, the left rear window regulator exploded last night. I have done this job on all 4 windows on her Lincoln LS we traded for this car. On the Lincoln, once the rivets are drilled out, the new regulator has threaded holes and bolts included to remount it. Do I have to go back in with rivets on the Mercedes, or can I use bolts and nuts?

You might be correct but the "normal" symptoms of a bad crankshaft position sensor is the car stops when warm, and will only start again after the engine has cooled off.

Your symptoms are very similar to what I had on my E55. It turned out to be the MAF sensor. Cutting out when braking to a stand still and then firing right back up is exactly what was happening to mine. Try cleaning the sensor first as per instructions on this site and see what happens. When I cleaned mine it got better for about a day then got 100 times worse, that's when I changed it.
Agree with Musikmann, this exact thing happened to me. My tech friend said this happens because when you come to the light and idle, especially after a trip on the highway (a la commute) the underhood temps get really high and the weakened CPS loses track of the crank and shuts down the car. After sitting for a few minute the car will crank right back up. Save yourself the headaches and swap out the CPS, takes 15 minutes.
I've never compared the part numbers but I don't think I'd order 5.5L AMG parts for my 3.2L V6. (That said, Frankie's correct about there being two sensors back in that age range, there is more information on identifying them in the stickies.)
Take care and enjoy the ride,
Greg
