There are too many causes to list. Have the OBDII codes read and post them on your thread here for interpretation.

I agree there are many causes. But most common one I can think of for this case is the O2 sensors. My ex 2000 E320 had same issue. Got it scanned at the Auto Zone for free. The codes were O2 related. I cleaned the sockets. The problem went away without needing to replace the O2 sensors.
I recommend you do the same.
Good luck

Come to think of it, my only CEL came on when I had my 1998 E430 (about 120,000 miles) and I was told it was one of the O2 sensors. I didn't know about cleaning the sockets but I had it replaced and it fixed the problem.
Good part is, that CEL is mostly coming with the emission problems. Meaning the car is drivable most of the time.
My neighbor had CEL in his Nissan coming every few days for years. When smog check was due, he cleared the code, passed the smog and continue for another 2 years.

i have to do emission testing. will CEL effect if i pass or not?
Do a google on OBD II and im sure will learn enough to understand why the CEL is coming on, but with a cel light on your car will fail an CO test. OBD II simply means On Board Diagnostics and it is a way of checking how much you are polluting the planet

Well, oz, with all due respect you're shotgunning it without complete information. O2 sensors don't typically get lazy or problematic in these cars until the 100,000 mile range or often more (assuming a properly maintained car run on proper fuel, etc.). Here, the OP has happily announced his proclivity to triple-digit speeds, but hasn't told us mileage on the car or maintenance history.
Were I to simply guess, I'd lean far more to the MAF sensor. It's known for it's sensitivity in these engines and often fails in the 60-80K range...moreover, as it initially starts to puke it will cause the light to go on and off. However, see below: simply guessing is moronic...again, with all due respect.
To the OP, take it to autozone and have them read the codes. Be sure you get the actual codes themselves because they will try to interpret them for you...may be right, maybe not. Then come back here and look at the code list in the DIY sticky or just post them and we'll give you a hand.
The single WORST thing you can do when you get a CEL is just start guessing and replacing parts. This is expensive, time-consuming and makes no sense at all. Get the codes, diagnose the issue, and repair/replace the deficiency. (FWIW the SECOND worst thing you can do is ignore the CEL; it means something is out of range and the computer is compensating for it, which in turn means you could very likely damage something else.
Lastly -- again to our OP -- don't just clear the codes to turn off the light. You will also reset the readiness counters and until you have driven the proper cycles you will not be able to have an emission test, CEL or not.
Take care and enjoy the ride,
Greg

My car has 120,567 miles left on it i got service B done to month ago by Mercedes Benz of Buckhead in Georgia. My car rumbles when i stop the mechanic told me that i need a motor mount to make the ride smoother. And i figured out that its expensive to get done. well the motor mount have any effect on the CEL. Also is there a video on how to make the codes show up on the ac display. And i really dont trust autozone cause they have told me alot of wrong things before. If i figure out the codes can i take them to my mercedes benz dealer for decoding. Or can i take it to them and they will pull the codes up for free and decode them for me. This car is used. The only thing i know that has been done on this car is service b has been done cause i got if fixed 2 months ago.
