Ok I've been looking through the threads and I'm more confused than when I started.
I just purchased a 1998 e320 with 112k on it and I would like to avoid any costly repairs with some preventative maintenance. I have records which show the car was cared for at the dealership, but don't exactly know what was done. I am comfortable doing most repairs but don't want to do more or less than whats needed. Heres my list
check the harmonic balancer
Oil change
Transmission fluid/filter change
Filters engine and hvac
spark plugs
breaks pads rotors bleed
change coolant
Serpentine belt
rear differential fluid,

Is that the list of what was done? Dod you know when each item was done because it might be time to do them again with the amount of miles you have now.
The harmonic balancer is a must and was a recall item so it should have been done.
If you are new to the car, it would not hurt to do an oil and filter change to start fresh in case the car was sitting or missed the last change.
You can test the coolant to see if it is still good yourself.
The plugs should have at least been done around 80K to 100K miles so you will be good on them for a while.
Changing the air filters is not a bad thing to do that doesn't take that long and is not that expensive. Should be done every 10K miles.
If the Serpentine belt was done recently, you are good for a while as well.
Be ready to replace the rear window regulators because they break a lot.

These were all maintenance projects I had in mind.
I have records which show where and when the vehicle went to the dealership, but not exactly what was done. I would like to protect my investment and develop a regular maintenance plan. All help is appreciated.

I would try to get a more detailed list from that dealer of what was done and when. If they won't give it to you, you list sounds comprehensive to me. Agreeing with E-Klasse that the HB should have already been taken care of. Maybe you should add a fuel filter?

When I bought my e320 I called the dealership with the vin# and they gave me the complete rundown on all service provided. They even switched records over to my name for further service needs.
Also, before I bought, I carfaxed the history to check for wrecks and interval service, as well as recall work and major repairs if annotated.
I have a few days left on my Carfax account. If you pm me the vin# i will gladly get a report for you and email any important info to you.

Thank you very much for the offer, but my dealer (after the sale and upon my request) provided me with the Carfax report for my car.
Just as an FYI: it is illegal to share your subscription to their service with anyone who has not paid for it. Will they catch you and prosecute? Highly unlikely but please be careful.

The offer was extended to bluesbaz. I have x amount of reports available for personal use, not commercial use, personal use. No illegal intent going on here. Also, on the longshot that I'm wrong, if helpng someone for no profit to me is wrong, at best I probaly lose my account. Prosecution? Thanks for the legal advice. I dont want to break the law.
Good luck on figuring out the best maintenance schedule.
From all the talks here I am getting an impression that those who do more, than MB advise have more problems with their cars than average.
