ABS ESP

2000 E320, 94 k miles: While driving yesterday, the ABS & ESP light came on and the FSS monitor displays "ABS Visit workshop and ESP Visit workshop". After stopping for a fill up and starting the car, the lights & the message are gone. The light or the message did not show this morning on the way to work. After going thru the forum, my first suspicion is the brake switch. Any input, as always, is greatly appreciated. What are the implications of using the car without fixing it?

The brake lamps are likely working properly, but you should check.

You might as well just replace the switch, since it's cheap and easy. Be sure to get the OEM part; substitute switches don't seem to hold up.

And welcome to the forum. Please take a moment to complete your user profile, available via the "User CP" link.

Thanks for the reply. Yes the brake lamps are working. I was just quoted around $17.00 by a dealer for the brake switch and I am going to replace it. I already took out the cover under the steering wheel. Unfortunately, I broke one of the clips (the one on the right). Hope the glue works. So anyone working on this, be careful removing the cover. I learned it the hard way.

Was it raining when you got the warnings? I had this happen twice when it was wet, and while turning a corner at a stop sign. Didn't do it again, and a week later the wear indicator came on - found I did indeed need new front pads.

Wondering if water plays games with an exposed or nearly exposed wear sensor?
