Getting ready to do the transmission service and had a question. I use a Topsider pump to do my oil changes - so would it save a little mess by pumping the tranny fluid out the dipstick tube first, before lowering the pan? Might save spilling a little fluid on the floor/hands/hair/eyes...
You really won't make a mess if you do one small step:
After draining the pan, loosely replace the plug. When removing the pan, leave the FRONT bolts loosely on (which allows you to "tilt" the pan down and aft), then remove the drain plug again.
I think I got a quart and a half out prior to removing the whole pan.
See attached pic
Personally, I wouldn't stick anything down the filler neck.... and risk any contamination.
I have used a top-sider to exchange some transmission fluid on a Ford. I made sure the tube was as clean as I could get it.
On my Benz, I would only do it with a brand-new piece of tubing. Even then, I'd think twice about it and probably just use the drain plug that they gave us.
Very good points - not worth the risk of contamination.
One more question - and this may have already been answered above, but is there an issue leaving the service dip-stick in the tube in place of the locking tab?

Thanks.
I don't think you would be asking about leaving the service dip stick in place if you had one in your hand. You can't do it.
