So I finally got a reader and pulled the codes and nothing... no codes or pending codes. I did notice while watching the rpm's at idle it seemed to fluctuate between 810 and 920 rpm's. Seems like a pretty wide swing. Any more thoughts on the 'almost' stalling issue?

I would check, Crank position sensor, O2's, cats and secondary air injection pump. I know that's a lot of broad "stuff" but you have a very vague problem. Could be anything, the purge pump/air injection only runs on a cold start so possible one of them is malfunctioning and throwing off your cold start fuel mixture. similarly the CPS or 02's could be on the fritz and causing similar A/F or timing issues. Cats are random, but if they are clogged it could cause all sorts of stuff.

Changed

your fuel filter lately? Not only will it affect fuel pressure ,thus idle ,but can cause intermittent maf codes.
Clean your maf for good measure crc brand maf cleaner, diy in the diy section.Don't wipe it with paper.

I have not done the fuel filter yet - I will add that to my list. And I happen to have a can of MAF cleaner and will try that also. Thanks.

Hey, Hi Fi, generally speaking it is best to start a new thread rather than hijack another. In this case O2 sensors are 100K items as noted, if you're close and plan on keeping the car then just replace them. Highway or City, no matter really, they just wear out and MB says 100K to change them. Might last less time, might last more, just like a light bulb, but that is the spec.

Great source is Auto Parts at AutohausAZ - OEM Auto Parts - Discount Replacement Parts, Resources and Car Care Tips as has been noted many times throughout this site. They have the pre-wired exact replacement (roughly US$400 for the set) or you can buy the Bosch "universal" ones and wire them in yourself to the existing connector if you feel competent to do that, all four are around US$135 or so. Just don't buy them from Ebay or you'll get to buy them twice, plus the task of changing them twice. I know you're up north, call autohaus and they probably ship up there too.

Take care and enjoy the ride,
Greg
