Kids messed up the key as they pulled out the metallic key out of fob and also the battery compartment for an E320 2001. (Don't ask me how). Well, they shoved the battery compartment back in (while leaving the batteries on floor) and it was that way for many hours.
I found the key not working and found out what happened. I tried to put the batteries in and found the little metal stip on battery somewhat crumpled. The key does not work for lock/unlock/trunk or alaram.
Has it lost it's memory or something due to batteries being out for too long? Or the little ding in that metal strip is causing a problem?
Do I need a new key or is this fixable? Is stealer the only option for a new key?

I think the metal strip must make good contact for the smart key to work but I don't know if you can order just the strip. I don't think your key has lost any memory as a result of this. Yes, a dealer is your only option for a new key, they must be programmed to your car.

This happened to me, I soldered a new piece of then wire to the old part where the metal strip broke off and it worked fine ! You can also try and pushing in the wire and using a piece of material ontop of the battery between the case to push againts it and make a contact
