I keep getting a indication of low engine oil level via the multifunction indicator but when I check the dip stick its fine.
I am new to the MB world so please forgive me if this is a dumb question but could it be telling me its time to change the oil? The car had been in storage for a while before I picked it up as a project.
If you are 100% certain the level is fine then I would check the level sensor and the wiring leading to it.
If the car had been in storage a while my recommendation would have to to change it as one of the first rites of passage to your ownership. At this point, the sooner, the better although that should have no effect on the malfunction display.
Welcome to the forum, too.
Take care and enjoy the ride,
Greg

The level is almost to the max mark. A oil change is planned ASAP. I have been busy getting the car to run and repairing some minor collision damage first. I can do a reset to get the msg to go away but it is back on the next start up.
Could you tell me where the oil level sensor is located? I have found most of the service manuals lacking in details!

On the I6 diesel I have no idea. You can go to STAR TekInfo - EPC Online and sign up for free for the parts catalog and that may yield some useful results, although for sensors under the hood it is usually pretty hard to locate things. There are lots of members with these cars so my guess is stay tuned and one of them will be jumping in soon with more info for you.
The FSM is pretty inexpensive, so if you plan on doing your own work -- which it sounds like you are -- that would be a wise investment.
