Hey jh225,

Thanks for backing me up here. I have made several mis-statements on these forums before and have either corrected or apologized for making them, as in my last post on this thread. I was pretty sure I was on solid ground when making my comments about rotary/orbital buffers in the hands of amateurs.

A lot of custom paint jobs, and yes i stood over his shoulder
The menzerna german products on lakes pads of the proper style for each stage and always taping off wipers door jams and the other typically thin paint areas and his car looks so nice a lady that walked by his car remarked at the shine. We are not even done yet.He had some poor repair work done on his front bumper and I am now teaching him how to sand fill prime and glaze coat and then apply a color coat he had mixed and put into a spray can at Napa.Perfect match and when color sanded and cleared will look perfect.
When i do the seminar Several members are coming from all over the country and it will be fun,and I can assure you none of them will have a disaster doing it properly, with proper prep and proper materials and good guidance.
This is no ordinary compound and it breaks down finer and finer so it gives an indication of time and heat generated.Once you have a small area done you can speed up the next areas because you will know the time required.

porter cables are nice ,but done properly nothing will remove swirls ,scratches and abuse like a good rotary and proper instruction.I could write a diy with supplies and rotary and pads listed and if someone followed it ,avoided plastic mirrors, lenses, and kept the buffer moving at the correct speed they could do it by fly by wire. When we finish his old abused beater, pictures will be posted to see what a novice is capable of

Btw when I do a custom paint job detail it is always taped off and several other pros up our way do the same. :::KILLER PAINT:::
Mike has my 12 year old sons picture on his shop wall with his face painted in flames at the last Seattle roadster show.Chip uses him,Jesse James uses him and he is a world class painter.

is about 15 minutes away and has several best paint awards at Oakland roadster show all these guys tape when polishing,so who am I to argue?

in light of the amount of people I have taught the proper use,I think your estimation of 99% might need a little revision.
and speaking of Meguiars, here is a taped up Vette

Ohlord,

You are correct about the PROPER use of buffers. BUT like I said before, the overwhelming majority of middle aged men on this forum, and the guys on every other car forum should be no where near a buffer of any kind, period. The average owner barely knows enough to change various parts out, why would you say it is OK to let them loose on their cars paint? Makes zero sense.

A consumer that picks up a direct drive and lays into his paint will either apply to much pressure, stay in the area too long, or any number of other issues and will wind up ruining his paint. A consumer that uses a R/O stands a much better chance of his paint surviving the ordeal.

You yourself state that you stood over your neighbors shoulder. Once again, the average owner does not have that option. Could I show someone the proper use? Sure, but guys like you and me are few and far between.

To say that R/O's like the Porter Cable don't give a shine is nonsense. A PC or other brands will give a very acceptable shine with pretty much zero chance of burning the paint. Does it have enough balls to remove wet sanded areas? No, not really, but that is not what it was made for.

As far as the taped edges, we will have to agree to disagree. I have never and will never use that procedure. Any area that is taped will then have to be hand compounded and buffed and will always be noticeable to the trained eye. A pro knows the proper amount of pressure to apply so that he will not burn through.

And BTW, CCS pads kick ass. Also sure looks like a P/C R/O on the table next to all the Meguiars in the Vette photo, no?
