Sound occurs when applying brakes, only when car is in reverse
Hi all
I noticed this a few months back after my alignment shop told me to listen for it.
When I'm in reverse - say when I'm pulling out of a parking spot - and I use the brakes so I can shift into drive, I hear a "click" that sounds like it's coming from the front of the car (likely driver's side but not sure). It only happens in reverse and the brakes perform very well. My alignment guy said that he noticed it and asked me if I had; I hadn't at the time so he told me to ensure that if it gets worse I bring it in. Since I'm going on a trip (flying, not driving) in a few days I'm likely not going to get this looked at before I go, so I guess I'll have to go in August sometime.
My father says it could be a "loose caliper" (not sure if that's exactly what he said, but he used the word caliper). Just want to get an idea of what to expect. The alignment shop didn't volunteer any ideas when they told me they had noticed it, they just said to ensure it doesn't get worse. It could be it seems worse because I'm driving w/ my windows open these days.
The brakes are relatively new - a little over a year old - and they haven't done anything funny in terms of performance since they were installed. Also, I use the E-brake every time I park, not sure if that could possibly have anything to do with it, but figured I'd share just in case.

Hey, fj. If it is exactly as you say and it doesn't bother you then I would lean a bit with your alignment guy. If it gets worse or changes in character then it would be more serious. (If it were a loose caliper it would have gotten worse or it seems likely you would also feel it in your foot.)
Of course I am also assuming that your alignment guy thoroughly inspected the steering and suspension components before he did the alignment. If not I would probably have it looked at. Could be a lot of things, so check with him and go from there.
Take care and enjoy the ride,
Greg

Ditto to Greg. I do not like unusual sounds and I would want to know exactly what the click represents. It has probably been too long for that guy to remember your car/issue but if you drive it in there, that might remind them. Also, check your invoice to see if there are any comments there.
