I have a 1996 e300d and I think I zapped something by being dumb.
I am a newbe when it comes to working on a MB and Before I read the owners manual, I charged the battery by way of the jump start lugs. I now have sequencial multfunction indicator msgs and a check engine light. The OBD codes change each time I check them. The car still starts and runs fine.
Could somebody tell me what I zaped (if I did) and offer some suggestions.

Hello ctsailor
was the battory compleatly flat when you put the car on charge ?
the error messages might be from the total loss of power rather than being zapped or over loaded. if this is the same as my foci you might be about to reset them by dissconnecting the battory and reconnecting it giveing it 5 mins without the battory connect might reset them !?
anyone else any idea ?
other thing if something was zapped the car would most prob not run, or would have something that has stopped working since the charge
hope this helps
Neil

The battery was partially charged when I did what I did. I have disconnected the battery severial times (sometimes for days at a time) since then and nothing gets reset.
BTW I also added fuel when I was charging the battery and have since read about the different fuel cap problems so have replaced the cap. This fixed nothing.....thanks

will have to look into, it might be that there is no faults but the car need a dealer reset as some faults latch also when a fault is active the cars like to put in afew dummy faults of its own.
bear with me and ill do some digging see what i can find on the subject
PS its not a good idea even with a diesel to add fuel with a charger on car. but i dont think this is causing your problem
can you list some of the faults on here that might help
Poor use of words on my part. The charging and fuel adding were not done at the same time (not that dumb!!). I bought the car (project) drove it home, turned it off (no msgs to this point), added 5 gal of fuel then charged the battery. The msg's started the next morning when I turned it on again. I will get and post the latest set of codes ASAP....thanks
Latest code display (in order received) p0380 "glow plug/heater "a" malfunction", p0120 "throttle/pedal pos sensor/switch a circuit malfunction", p0200 " injector circuit malfunction", p0400 "egr flow malfunction", p0403 "egr circuit malfunction". All erased the first time I tried. I restarted the car and test again and got p0400 & p0403. I erased them and started again and got a p0400. I know from past tries that the next time I start the car I may be back to 4-5 codes again.
I have been able to eliminate all multfunction indicator msgs except "check engine electronics" by just the smallest bit of attention to the item (ie added .5 cup of water to windshield washer tank).
battery condition, have a hydrometer?Test it.It was okay to charge with the underhood lug as long as you do so with the key out.Clearing the codes does not erase them if the underlying condition still exists.Do you have a real time scanner or just a obd2 HH unit.?With that many faults going on ,i would charge the battery over night put a load on iti.e. turn on the headlights while not running and then test the battery,if it tests good might be cheaper to get it to an indie shop with a good updated sds and run the diagnostics.
