Hello, I just bought my first BENZO. It is a 1997 E420. I have had 1 SRS light and 3 check engine light/engine electronics. Auto Zone was able to clear 1 of the 3 check engine lights which was due to a bad #1 coil. The other 2 check engine lights were due to the tranny in limp mode and Auto Zone scanner couldnt clear those or the SRS light even after the problem was fixed. I took it a local mechanic and he cleared them every time but he charges $75.00 every time. I am sure that I will be getting more codes in the future so to make a long story short "What scanner should I buy that will clear SRS codes and those horrible transmission limp mode codes that the Auto Zone scanner cant do?" (If possible $800. or less) This car breaks down alot but I would rather push my benz than drive a japanese car
on a repetitive basis is a waste of time and money; the codes are there to tell you something. You should look to the underlying causes of what is causing the codes to be tripped, as opposed to having them cleared at $75 a crack.
Get ohlord's Harbor Freight scanner, #94169 bu Cenn-Tech, and post the codes here for input/interpretation.
There is a good chance that the coil fault on #1 will return; these cars do end up needing new coil packs as they age. I have replaced two so far, and another forum member has replaced all eight. When replacing the coil, it is also prudent to replace the connector that goes between the coil-pack and the spark plug.
The transmission going into limp mode could be caused by many things. Post the actual code(s) here and we will try to help you figure this out...
I didnt just go have the codes cleared. I repaired the problems, but all im asking is what scan tool to buy that can clear SRS codes and the tranny limp mode codes. The scan tool that auto zone uses could not clear those codes,even after the failed parts were replaced. Your telling me that the Harbor Freight scanner, #94169 bu Cenn-Tech will clear srs codes and the tranny codes?

I don't understand why the tech who fixed the problems didn't clear the codes as part of the job. Are you positive the problems are solved or could they (or others) still be there and tripping the codes again? What were the codes before you had the work done and what are they now? Are they the same ones or different?

I repaired the car and auto zone cleared the cylinder misfire code. my tranny went into limp mode, popped a check engine light /engine electronics and the code was a speed sensor/ turbine something something,i cant remember but i changed out the electronics board in the tranny took it to autozone and the scanner they had could not clear the code thats why i took it to a repair shop and his scanner cleared it.no more problems car runs perfect now but in the future when the car breaks down again and i fix it myself i dont want to go pay someone $75.00 a pop. I can buy my own scanner and it would pay itself off.
So back to my original question which scanner can do this and still be under 800?
SDS is available, but is in the "way over $800" category. I don't remember the specifics, but I think you can get it for about $12K, plus $3K/year license fees. Not in the DIY realm at all.
I've heard of people using some Carsoft system of which I am unfamiliar, or a Snap-On system which are quite prevalent in the independent market. The Snap-On system is also somewhat expensive at several thousand, but used models may be available.
If anyone knows the capabilities of the Carsoft system, I would also be interested.

Can you please tell me where I can get one or order one. I also have a an SRS error one and the mechanic could not find out whats wrong with the car. Also Is there a way I can Buy a USC that would Hook up to car to my laptop and I can use a software to see the problems.
if they are a temporary condition or the part is fixed.
srs errors will clear if part is fixed or reset by sds.
if your srs light is on you need to check the occupant seat sensor.Look in the diy for repair,most often a broken wire.

94169 will clear obd2 error codes and help you set i/m readiness codes .it will not clear a srs code or a trans code,if those codes keep coming back the op needs to find out what was not fixed.

autotap.com is a laptop based real time scanner for $199 it will do a lot but it will not reset srs warnings.
