In a previous discussion it was mentioned that lowering a 4matic would be very expensive.
Can anyone tell me about how much vs. a Non 4matic?
Is it my impression or are the 4matics slightly elevated vs. non 4matics. I just recently noticed the rather large gap in the wheel well...or is it just me?
can remove the springs and take them to a good metal fabricator and have exactly 1/2 coil cut off with a cold saw.Not a torch, cold saw only.Get it aligned afterwards.Old school drop but it works on the benz, then you can fine tune with pads.

I would not chop the springs on your car, that is really unsafe. If you want a huge drop, you will have to buy custom springs.

Yeah good luck finding them too. $799 from lorinser just for the springs, some guy on here was ordering them from Germany, he should have his 430 4m lowered by now, do a search. I guess the main spring mfgs, like eibach, intrax etc, just didn't bother to fab up a 4M spring when the 210 came out. Since our springs sit on top of the shock, unlike RWD, you should also look into custom coilovers since you may want to change the shocks too.
I just swapped in new Bilstein HD shocks with the factory springs and I'm sporting the jacked-up 4x4 look. Not the smoothest looking, but I can handle steep parking lot dips and driveways w/o the worry of bottoming out and scraping up the underbelly... I drove a slammed awd eclipse for a few years before the whole fast and furious thing happened and shamed the import community lol, and I routinely scraped the underside of that car. It seriously changes your ability to access certain places.
I guess I'm trying to make this the most useful comfortable daily driver ever, though it would look better slammed to the ground with 19's.
Good luck on lowering the 4M, please post your findings!
measured directly across the spring and cut with a cold saw will not affect the tension in the coil,a coil that has been around along time has a set memory and when cold cut will not sag and since it already has a memory it will not drop like aftermarket springs that take months to settle in.Final ride height can be adjusted with the pads and about 16mm over the range of several pad thicknesses.
Get it aligned afterwards.

What is unsafe about a cold cut spring? We have been doing them for years and most often with better tuned results than pricey custom springs. They are made and cut,so what makes a new cut unsafe?Cold cut saw is the key
it is illegal and dangerous to cut springs. If you do it properly it might work, but I wouldn't be giving this type of advice over a forum. Imagine the liability issues if its done improperly? Your springs will be very stiff if you do cut them (i.e. every piece of gravel, road impurities etc will be felt). DO you know the wire thickness of 4 matic springs? What about the active coils? Without knowing this information I would be scared to advise someone to cut their springs. If you cut your springs chances are your car will ride like crap. A 4 matic benz is much more complicated than the non-4matics so I would be very weary of doing this.
coil max is all i am suggesting, have you ever compared an oem spring to an amg spring ?several fewer coils and all cut fro a cold extrusion spring former.1/2 coil measured across the springs diameter will not be an issue, will change ride quality less then h/r or eibachs and have no need to wait for the springs to settle before getting it properly aligned.
who said it is illegal to chop a spring?nobody,no law anyplace.the springs of a 4matic are no more complicated than a rwd just different length.cold cut them and your ride will close up the gap and firm up a bit,but the 4matic can use some firming up since it rides like a boat anyway.
check your local code, it is illegal in most states to cut springs, and most shop won't even cut springs, because they can lose their license if they are caught cutting springs.
in california land of cut springsthey were invented there.i could find a 100 places within in a close range of you to chop a spring.Any fab shop, hot rod shop,a quality saws all in a vise in your own shop.
