I own 1999 E200 since 2004 the car is great I love it, recently been noticing a noise in the gear box shifter internally just like plastic is loose somewhere and that the gear handle is loose I have opened the center counsel where the power windows are located but there is nothing there it’s just the handle and the box. This only happens when the car is in motion and its shifting high RPM shifting, so I toke it to my mechanic and he looked it over and it was some loose plastic bolt underneath the catalyst converter (Green plastic bolt, you have to go under the car to fix) replaced it and this back to normal
