I'm looking to buy some good diagnostic hardware and software to connect to a laptop. One that is compatible with a 97 E320. Does anyone have any recommendations. For some reason my E320 goes into Limp Mode every once and awhile and won't come out everytime. I'm looking to use the software to reset it and also find out what causes it.
I personally use a regular scanner but I know someone who swears by Carsoft 7.4. Lets see what some of the members will recommend, why don't you post your exact limp issue and get help wright here.
any codes?
Have you changed the fluid and filter with mb spec 722.6 fluid?
Has anyone spilled liquid into the shifter?
pending codes can be read with 94169 scanner from harborfreight.com $59
Erase codes with same, however you cannot clear codes if the condition still exists.Even resetting via a battery disconnect will just have the problem return after a few faulty cycles have been registered.

if you really feel the need for a real time scanner pc based you can find no better at the price than the Autotap unit for $199
Hey guys. Sorry about the delay. Sometimes I can 't post on here... I don't know way. Something with my account I guess. I don't get notifications either.
Back to the E320, from what I know, no one has spilled anything on the shifter. Before I bought the car, me and the owner took it for a ride. She shifted fine till she warmed up. Then after stopping at a light and taking off she wouldn't shift out of 1st. I believe it was first. No CEL or anything was on, so I don't think it was in Limp Home Mode then. But after stopping and putting her in park, she wouldn't going into any gears, REV or Drive. Once we got back at the old owners house and she cooled down she would go back into gear until she warmed up again. Never went back out on the road with her again after that till I changed the fluid and filter. Trailored her to my garage after I bought her and followed my dad's suggestion who's a mechanic, changed the filter and fluid completely, pan and converter, flush lines. Did that. I didn't use the MB brand fluid, but used the Shell alternative that I've read about here and on the internet. Once I had her all back together she would go into gear everytime with out a problem. Checked the fluid at the correct temp with the workshop dip stick, added a bit cause it needed it. But I have the check engine electronics lights on now. I can't remember when it came on. I believe it was on before I did all this thou.
I'm waiting to get the Multiplexer and cable still. Hopefully that will tell me why the check engine electronics light is on.
Anyone have any thoughts or suggestions ? Thanks in advance guys.
the wrong fluid.2. check the electrical connector for leaks.3 who said you could use non spec fluid.4,why would you buy a car with known fault issues unless they were selling it for about 2 grand a 97 is only worth 6 in top shape.obd2 94169 will show pending power train codes for the trans.
