How do you feel about unlocking the sticky threads above?
Here is my proposal.
You could add a new post to the appropriate DIY sticky thread linking to another thread. That is, the DIY procedure itself would not be added to the DIY thread, but only a link as is currently done in the lone post in each thread.
Discussion would be allowed in the sticky thread for some appropriate time (say, a week at most) whereupon the originating link would be taken from the new post and added to the first post (the only post that exists now), or not (as appropriate), and all discussion would be deleted to trim the thread.
The idea is to give you an easy way to nominate threads for the DIY. You could nominate anyone's thread including your own. The moderators would still decide whether to include the thread, but be assured that your input as to what to include is valuable. If something is already covered very well, we might not need a new link in the DIY. But if you do a better job, we would like to add it.
This would start out as an experiment to ensure that things don't get out of hand.
Speaking only as a former mod, I have to think that would make the moderating chores painful and time-consuming for the four stickies, but if that's what you're willing to undertake, then...
As an alternative, how about a sticky that is open titled "Proposed New DIY/TIPS" or something like that and people could post their links there, discussion ensues and the ones that are suitable could then be elevated to lofty perma-status in the specific DIY threads appropriate to the topic. The ones that aren't are still there for folks to peruse if they wish.
JMHO...
Take care and enjoy the polling,
Greg

I'll agree with Greg on this one.

You can't really 'jack a thread that seeks opinions and is pretty much defunct, but you can go OT and this thread put the thought in my head: How awesome would it be to have a presidential candidate that in polls came out the inverse of this thread, that is, one who could garner so much universal support? When is the last time you entered the voting booth and felt great about your vote, that it was cast for truly the best person for the job, not the lesser evil of the choices presented?

I would have to agree that unlocking the DIY stickies would be more trouble to the MOD than its worth to us faithful users.
I do have a suggestion though ~
As many jobs aren’t DIY for some of us, I think it would be sticky worthy to add a Dealership or Service Shop sticky as to peoples experiences with local shops and indies. I know it would be allot of work but once its set up it would definitely be a useful tool as many of us only have previously posted threads by who knows what author that may or may not be affiliated with said shop or the local phone book to go by.
Shops organized by state of course, posts must have service location, service price, and service done & opinion, and whether or not the opinion / post is trustworthy should be common sense. If the post says its a great shop and you go there / call them and what you experience contradicts the post then by all means walk away and post your experience. I tend to listen more to a poster here with many other posts vs. a 1 or 2 post having member and even take the time to read their other posts to get a feel for them (much like eBay’s user rating). For added proof we could even scratch off confidential information and post scans / pics of receipts as we do pics of our cars / etc now.
I know it may be allot of work for a MOD but maybe less than opening the DIY sticky (I dunno) and it may have even been done before but I think it would be a useful tool and create balance with DIY in one section and Indie Shop / Dealership experience in the other.
Just my 2 cents...
Also - I know some folks might suggest using the search function for this but typing in "Virginia Service" netted me 6 posts (two of which I started myself), "repair virginia" = 0 posts, "indie virginia" = 0 posts, Alexandria Service = 3 posts, etc. I think a W210 specific service thread would be great - especially since a shop that is great on another model / generation of MB might not be great on ours.
indeed.
The hours put in, the attitudes dealt with, and the issues presented take a toll, huh??
That said, they provide the rudder this ship needs to stay off the rocks. Opening the stickys would let improper, ERRORNIOUS, and bad ideas a platform. A platform that the blog could be LIABLE for. Example, any SRS post that is wrong could get somebody killed. A very bad thing to be a Contributor to, huh? This info is on threads but that is a public forum.
As long as we have mods who 'can take it' lets not change.

I would not propose something unless it was to solve a problem. And it is. Actually, there are two fundamental problems.
I often see articles that look like they would be good additions to one of the DIY threads. However, most of the time I do not have the time to edit that HUGE post to add them. I go back later intending to add a link to the thread, and what do you know, I can't find what I want to add. Of course, I can do a search, but I really don't have all of the time in the world for moderating here. I'm sure that you can imagine. That's problem number 1.
Problem number 2 is a bit more subtle. I do not want to be the sole arbitrator of what gets included in the DIY threads. I don't even want to be half of the two arbitrators. I want YOUR input as to what should be there. I have not tackled all of the jobs on the car, and often I will not be able to judge the relative quality of two different write-ups for the same job.
You can't really 'jack a thread that seeks opinions and is pretty much defunct, but you can go OT and this thread put the thought in my head: How awesome would it be to have a presidential candidate that in polls came out the inverse of this thread, that is, one who could garner so much universal support? Everyone essentially voted "None of the above" here. You can do that in real life and feel great about yourself!
